Post steel GT flares revised

OK,since I'm too retarded to know how to post a reply,I'll create a new topic!!I should be more specific,Rich johnson says the factory cars were butt welded sooo if thats how they did it than so will I.My main concern which no one really has an answer for is how do you locate them properly,do you use the GT rocker panels which are replicas of the origanals,or do you put them on eyeball and weld.

BTW, to post a reply, look at the lower left corner of the message screen. There are two "buttons". One is labeled "Post Reply". Click on that and you'll get a "Post A Reply" screen.

With regards to welding the flares on... I didn't weld them on myself (too scared! ), so I had a body shop do it. I think all they did was line up the bottom of the flares to match the bottom of the existing fenders to get them right. I'm sure there are others out there who can provide more insight than I...

Question

Thanks David,When the body shop installed them did they use the rockers as a guidline for spacing or were they added after the flares were already installed, also lineing up the bottoms makes perfect sense for the hieght factor but,the wheel openings on the flares is about 2 inches wider than the factory fender

Honestly, I wish I could remember the numbers. It's been several years ago. I called Automobile Atlanta (where I purchased the flares) and got measurements from them. They actually went out and meaured the 916 in their showroom to get the measurements for me!

I'm STILL not finished with my car! It's in storage awaiting a garage to be built at our house. Someday soon...

Ok, I dug around through my files, and guess what I found... The original hand drawn piece of paper that the guys at Automobile Atlanta sent to me with the flare dimensions! Note that it has two sets of measurements. One is from the 916 and the other is from their blue 914-6 with the M471 option package (homologated). I'll e-mail it to you.

Another dead give-away is getting the height correct. At the highest point, the fender should flow into the flare in a straight line, both front and rear. Sometimes/frequently they are fitted a tad too low, so that the line of the fender curves downwards, and then outwards when it meets the flare. Does that make sense?
