Did 914's come with AC?

914's didn't "come" with AC. It was a "dealer installed" option. There were two different manufacturers of the AC kits. Both were very similar, just slightly different configurations. Both styles are installed below the dash and require trimming of the center guage console (if your car has one). You can install AC in your car if it doesn't already have it. There are places that will sell you all the components that you need for the job, including some used and some new pieces. Automobile Atlanta used to, and probably still does, sell the kits. Let me know if you need more info.

The AC doesn't cut off any HP if it's turned off. But seriously, It's been a while since mine had it's AC working (car is still under restoration - about 90% done), but the old York compressor definitely lets you know it's there, just like it did on my 911. I changed out the York for a Sanden on the 911 and would strongly recommend using a rotary style compressor. You can use them on 914's and they take much less HP to run. I can't even tell when it kicks in on the 911.
