Speedometer - Bezel removal
I have a '73 1.7 914. I've been trying to buy a speedometer in good working condition. So far, I've purchased two. One showed my speed but the odometer was not functional. The second worked for 500 miles then started making a noise a banshee would hate!. If I could get the bezels off I'm sure I could make a good one out of the two. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks......... bruce

Don't try it. They are thin steel and removal destroys the metal and cracks the paint. The speedo shops remove them and replace them with new parts and special crimping tools.

I have done it several times. One thing that destroys the odometer is trying to reset while moving. It eats the plastic gears. You can remove the bezel using a small screw driver and carefully pry up the thin metal strip all the way around. To reinstall I used a thin piece of wood to tap the bezel back in place.
Good luck...it just takes patience.
