Post Just bought 914 widebody - have engine question.

Have you guys heard of anyone putting a 3.4 F-6 engine from a 996 in a 914? Is this a good choice for a track car? What level of complexity is involved in doing this engine install? I already have a 915 tranny.

Thanks.

I've heard that a few people are in the planning stages of this kind of swap, but I would not recommend it for you for a few reasons unless you have money to burn or have access to a bunch of fabrication equipment, it is beyond the average home mechanic.

the 996 engine is watercooled, not that big of deal since plenty of 914's have been converted to watercooled powerplants. Expect $1000USD for radiator and fans that'll work.

The 915 transmission will not work with the 996 regular engine. Different mounting for the transmission/engine interface. A 996TT or GT2 motor will bolt up to your 915 (those engines are based on the 963 3.6 block), but if you had that kind of money to buy one of those engines, you wouldn't be asking anyone here for advice since you'd be paying a professional to do the swap for you.
A boxster transmission will work, but it will not bolt in to the car and finding someone that will figure it out for you will not be cheap.

In fact the 915 transmission will not work with an aircooled engine until you dump a grand into it to flip the ring and pinion

I'm not sure what kind of racing you want to do or how competitive you'd like to be. Every group has rules and regulations, you need to find out which group you can run in with the car that you have.

Find someone near you that has a car that is similar or go the races to talk to someone that has a race 914 and seek advice on the class and costs of such a venture.

The transmission already has a Vellios kit on it so I believe the ring and pinion are already flipped. I was told by the previous owner that there was $4000 put into the transmision by Vellios himself. How would one tell what was done?

Funny thing is that I just saw a new 996TT engine for sale on e-bay going for the not so cheap price of $19000 US. Makes the rebuild cost of my 944 turbo look like peanuts. Sure would be cool to have the 996TT engine in a 914 though....

How long is a 915 going to standard up to all that torque? I wouldn't have thought it would be long.

Cheers, James

Turn the input shaft the correct direction and see if you have 5 forward or reverse gears

I think the easiest thing to do is put a 3.0 or 3.2 into the car.
