Post GEX engines???

Has anybody ever heard about GEX engine builders in Baldwin Park, CA? They build VW , and 914 longblocks. They sell a 1.7 long block for ~$1,200. Is that too much to pay?

Any reccomendations for an engine builder in the Southern California area?

Yes I have heard of them. I used to own a 74 super beetle. had a GEX motor in it. totally stock pretty expensive I thought. Now that I own 928 it don't look so bad. But I rebuilt a different motor all ballanced ported polished big valve heads full flow oil filter 1915 cc real screamer. for right at a grand. P.S. I am going to pick up my 914 on Saturday from a guy in Cleveland.

Question

Price is not out of line, actually pretty cheap. I DID here some not so kind things about them tho' (didn't stand behind product, etc.) Make sure you pay for it with a credit card, so you can dispute the charge if they don't do right

Beware of GEX! I used to build VW engines before I worked on Porsches. GEX had a good reputation in the early days but the lost all that when they went for the cheapest possible prices. In doing this they moved to Mexico and hired unskilled machinists, used old way worn cores, and the quality went 3rd world. Maybe I may be overdoing it a little but everything I got from then I sent back and found another company. To bad Mark Stephens isn't still around, he was the type 4 engine guy.

Forget GEX; their quality leaves much to be desired. Haven't heard of anyone with a good experience.

Head over to Raby's Aircooled Technology and deal with a pro. He might be in the East Coast, but his shipping rates are very reasonable.

This guy bleeds T-IV's, and I'm sure he can give you a decent price.

Forget GEX; their quality leaves much to be desired. Haven't heard of anyone with a good experience.

I will second that one! I have seen and heard plenty about the quality of their engines, and I have made sure to steer clear of their rebuilds. But I do have to hand it to them- they do sell some nice stuff you can't get anywhere else- very clean rebuilt oil coolers (they even put the foam strip that was supposed to be there for type 3 oil coolers) as well as autostick oil pumps (no body even offers these rebuilt, let along upgraded with larger gears).

You couldn't ask for a better guy. Jake is groovy and his work is second to none. He backs up all his work with a real warranty and even dyno tests his engines thoroughly before shipping them. And his pricing is most reasonable, considering what you are getting.

Another option is to rebuild it yourself. Jake, in conjunction with Bug Me Video, has made a series of training videos to guide you through the process. Also, the guys on www.shoptalkforums.com would be helpful in such an endeavor too. Discuss some options with others who have been in your same footsteps.

Take care,
