Post towing a 914

Can a 74 914-4 be towed home after purchase. the owner doesn't recommend driving it all the way to mississippi about 1200 miles. if I remove the front bumper cover can I safely tow it with a tow bar.

Joe,
I can not think of a mechanical reason why a you could not flat tow, assuming the car is in neutral. The transaxle should not overheat since it is air cooled anyway.
As far as safety, I think the trailer method is the safest when travelling 1200 miles. The car is out of the way of errant motorists....Ease of braking, etc. The next would be a tow method which removes two of the tires from the road and the least desirable would be the four wheel flat tow method.
Good luck.
Pete
