Question 914 stuff 1974 2.0 FI stock spec rebuild

Just had the engine rebuilt.Runs like a top and definitely has more power. First oil change at 600 miles. Now at 1600 miles, ready for valve readjustment. New cam, valve job, heads resealed, rings. Original FI and I would not consider carbs. Since rebuild, has developed a "flat spot" at 4K RPM. If I stay on the throttle, it will eventually push through this "wall". Could it be the Rev Limiting Rotor? A mechanic has suggested either swapping to 1973 throttle body to have 2 vacuum lines to distributor or tapping mine for this. What gives?

Sounds like the standard worn throttle position switch condition...th repair os to replace the throttle switch because the tracks get worn.

Another possibility might be stuck weights in the distributor...have they been lubed lately?

There is a ton of information and resources on the 914 tech forums on the Peleican Parts BBS, with a searchable archive.

Thumbs up

New tps, vacuum sensor, cold start valve, fuel pressure regulator, Pertronix, plugs, cables, Blue coil, cyl temp sensor, air temp sensor, dist. cap and rev limiting rotor, fuel injection points, computer brain, auxiliary air regulator, pretty much everything. I need to do the 20 click test on the tps to see if it needs adjustment. It runs great otherwise and is such a difference from the pre-overhaul condition that I can "live" with this for now, keeps the lead foot in check during break in too.. Need to check for the free operation of the weights as you say. Having valve adjustment and rear bearing replaced Friday so I will address this problem too. Thanks for your help.

Wow you've replaced just about everything. Except the FI harness.

The only other time I've seen that stumble was cosued by an errant electrical connection in the FI harness somewhere, apparently induced at a certain vibration frequency. Check all your conenctions for solid connectivity.

I repair/rebuild 914 FI harnesses if you need help in that way.

Did you change your exhaust?
Sometimes this will cause a flat spot if it's too free-flowing.

No, exhaust is still ss exchangers with Bursch muffler. I am checking the TPS today for the "20 Click Adjustment". It was new before the rebuild so I don't see why the problem now. I have not checked the weights on the distributor yet.
