Talking 914 Commuter...Good Idea / Bad Idea?

I was thinking of getting a 914 as a commuter car for work and school, but I don't know which year to get. I would like to have a 2.0 litre engine but I'm not sure if this is the way to go. I currently have an '83 944 that I do all the maintenance on, so working on it shouldn't be a problem. I'm looking for something that is economical as well as fun to drive. If it breaks down, I still have my 944 untill I get it back up.

Things I would like to know are...

1) How are they on mileage?
2) How difficult are they to work on?
3) How reliable are they?
4) What are the best / worst years?
5) What is a fair price range?

Feel free to add any other suggestions or comments.

Thanks,
Joe

I believe the average gas mileage is in the high 20's maybe a tad bit more.

easy to work on, the hardest thing is leaning over into the engine compartment for tuneups. you might be under the car which is not a problem as long as you have a good jack and stands.

no less reliable than your 944...it all depends on the previous owner and how well they took care of it. if they half-@ssed the repairs and maintenance, then it'll be more work for you.

'73 2.0 are most popular in california for a few reasons....no smog, and better performance due to being lighter than the later year cars...'74 would be a close second.

4000 to 5000 should get a real nice car.
they can be found cheaper, but they normally need more work.

as for a daily driver, sure no reason why not, many 914 owners drive thier cars everyday, good luck, and welcome to teenerville

I drive my 914 every day, rain or shine. And it's fun too. I think it's pretty easy to work on, because it's all ever so simple. And because of everyone on this forum has knowledge of the 914.
