Question catalytic converters

I've got a non-California '75 1.8 with a cat-pipe where a cat converter might go. Having just driven 1800 miles (to the 914 SIG Mid USA Ramble!)I was happy to be getting >30 mpg and just wondered if I could clean up my emisions, too.

Anyone running the cat. on their car? I know the thing gets hot; does it increase back pressure? Decrease gas mileage? Cause numerous headaches?

Thanks

It will increase backpressure a bit, but probably not enough to make a terrible difference. It also acts just like another muffler, and will change the whole sound of your exhaust system. Personally, I don't see much reason for one unless you are forced to pass an emissions test.
