2.0 liter crankshaft question
Last night I was outbid on e-bay for a 914 2.0 liter crankshaft. I think it finally went for about $170. A bit of searching this morning on my PET program and my VW ETKA program turned up a surprise which, I think, makes me happy I was outbid. PET shows the 2.0 liter crankshaft part number as 039.105.101 A. In the VW program, the crank for a '78 bus (Type 2 with Type 4 motor) is listed as part number 039.105.101 A, also. Hmmmm! A quick check of VW parts suppliers (like Bus Depot) reveals that a reconditioned bus crank of this part number sells for $54 exchange! It looks like I should be glad I was outbid. Do you folks agree that the 2.0 liter bus engine indeed has the same crank as a '74 914 2.0 liter? Remember, the part number is exactly the same.

Yup. The bus crank and the 914 2L crank are the same. I purchased mine 2L crank from DRP Machine freshly counterweighted, balanced, and nitrided for less than what that auction went for. Wow! Don't you just love those deals on ebay :-)

Where would I go and find one of those reconditioned cranks? I should find out this weekend if I need it for sure.
