Default Original 916 for sale on ebay- $190K and still going...

Holy cow- the holy grail of 914's!!!!!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...spagenameZWDVW

Some info from Dean Bachelor's book:

* Car was built to respond to Ferrari Dino
* Top targa panel fixed to body for extra stiffness
* 4-wheel ventilated brakes
* 185/70-15 tires
* Fuel injected 911s engine 190 DIN/ 210 SAE hp per book (the ebay ad says the car has the 2.7RS spec motor??? Carrera 2.7 had 210 DIN/230 SAE hp, but per Dean Bachelor the 911S motor was used...and Bachelor says the Carrera 2.7 was introducedin 1973) Some websites I looked at say 190/210 hp motor is used...one site had some performance numbers (don't know if they are factory, magazine, or made up) 0-60 6.6 seconds, top speed 145mph.
* fastest accelerating porsche for 1972
* Oil temp gauge and pressure gauge on dash- fuel gauge in center console
* 5-speed in normal pattern, with first up and to the left
* Per the book, 20 were made (vs. ebay ad says 11 were made- I notice other web sites claim 11 were made as well)
* The book also says the dash is color keyed to the interior, whereas this one is black dash. With such a specality car, it's possible things were changed from car to car. Is the dash on this 916 leather? Any other 914's with leather dash- was it ever an option? (I'm not very familiar with 914s...)

Take a look at the pics- beautiful! Wish I had endless money and garage space

-Andrew

Here's a good article on the 916- you may have to zoom in to read it. Looks like the motor made 190 net SAE HP (the 210 is probably a gross SAE number). Interesting stuff!

You would think a broker of such a high valued car would get the right engine in the description. I'm being picky here because the sellers sound very snobby to me:

" (WE REGRET THAT WE WILL NOT RESPOND TO INQUIRIES UNLESS YOU HAVE EXTENSIVE EBAY HISTORY OR YOU ARE A PREVIOUS CLIENT) "

So if you want this car and have the money to buy it but haven't bought/sold enough on ebay (in their opinion), they won't return your information requests....

My recollection is that the 2.4L S motor was used in the 916. Rated at 190hp (not sure if DIN or SAE, but SAE values were slightly less than DIN values, so I am not sure how the 190/210 reference above is to be taken. Also, IIRC, at that ime (early 1970's) only US manufacturers used GROSS SAE numbers. Thats why many V-8's had seemingly hundreds more "brochure hp" than actual HP.)

Is it possible that given the rareity of the 916, that the owner went back to Porsche to have a 2.7RS spec motor installed? Possible - yes? Likely - not sure.

I have that old R&T issue with Peter Greggs' car. Seems like old times seeing it again

There is still nothing quite like a 914. Perfomance and practicality...and with only 69 HP in my 73 1.7.

"Bidding has ended" doesn't always mean "sold"... but $200K is a fair chunk of change isn't it.
