If you find a little rust on a 914 then that means that there is more in others. If this thing has been sitting outsode this long it is probably not worth restoring. But by parting it out you might be helping to get other 914-6's back on the road. So in this cars death you would be saving other 914-6's in the end. The car is probably worth more in parts anyway.

It's certainly worth more in parts, but the purist in me wants the car to be restored by one of the many guys emailing me to buy the car to do so, so I'll take my loss to ensure it's restored.
Good for the car, bad for me, but it's the right thing to do.
Mark.

I remember looking at a 914-6 in Austin at least 10 years ago and it was in a similar condition as your car. I think it was on Burnet road or thereabouts sitting under a tarp in a business district. Could this be the same car? I think I remember the dash had many of the instruments pulled out. I passed on it since it was way beyond restoration.

Mark,
Good for you and thank you from one 914 guy to another. There aren't many left and that is great that your willing to maybe lose some money on finding someone to fix it! Post the ad on Rennlist, with pics and price. Best wishes - Jay

it very well may be worth boxing up in the garage and keeping it in it's current state..... I mean the old 356's weren't very valued in the 70's.... it's all about depreciation cycles, it's typically 20 years and 914's are on the up now (slowly) and the 914-6 is the rarest and most desireable of all
food for thought

I agree with Vancouver. I know people who restore rusted 356s that most people would toss in an instant as junk. And they fabricate their own new sheet metal parts from parts gleaned from other cars. Unbelieveably costly but the finished product is a concours quality 356 from literally junk. Things like the rear valance on the 914/6 which is unique to the six are no longer available. Of course someone has an original all tucked away in sealed plastic waiting for a rainy day and someone who needs one and has the cash. I have two rear valances, and one appears to be smashed beyond repair, but I will repair it someday. It is too valuable to toss. Rear calipers are also unique to sixes and also Ferrari Dinos, IF you can find any in rebuildable condition. Someday.........you will have the only set available (besides someone I know who has an original cherry set in a plastic bag in his drawer, and he'll sell for the 'right' price).

i don't see why you shouldn't part it out..i have sawed up 10 914-6's over the years...2 in the last 2 years alone. don't look at it as a romantic if you want to make $ off it

If you want to save it for a project, then good for you. However, NickG is right about not getting caught up in the fact that it is a 914-6! As I said before, by parting out this 6 that will give other 6's a chance to be on the road again!
