Default thinking of converting.....

I currently have an 81 928 which is by far the most problematic car I've ever owned in my life! I am thinking of getting rid of it but I still want a Porsche. My question to you guys is this.......... Of the 924, 944, and 914 which car could I have the most fun with (on the street) and still not break the bank? Also which of those would be considered the more reliable of the three? I'm not looking for a "daily" car I would just be driving it to meets on saturdays and sundays. Thanks in advance for all your responses.......

944 turbo is the most bang for the buck without a doubt- you just have to find a good one. 914-6 would be the most fun, but rare (especially the "real" ones). 924's are IMHO not that great, the engines were...sorry to **** off 924 owners, pretty helpless. 944's handle well but are not that fast. I've had one of each over the years (except a 924) and would go for the 914 if you want a fun, simple, and pure sports car... if you want some creature comforts (like AC if you live in Florida) you'll obviously need to go for a 944.

944 S2 with 211 PS (here - maybe not in US) is probably the best value total package.

Fast enough to be fun, cheap enough to live with and young enough to have the creature comforts (ABS, power steering, air con.)

Damn, I think I'll go an get one myself !!

I have owned a 944 S2, a 914, and a Boxster. My friend tells me that my Boxster is like his 914-6, plenty of scoot. The S2 was a lot of fun, but didn't handle anywhere close to the Boxster or the 914. The 914 wins for fun but has little in the way of creature comforts.
There were 3000 some odd 914-6s made. Most of them gone or in the hands of collectors or hoarded.
Less than 1000 S2s per year of production.
Boxsters are a bargain right now.

if you want to spring for a 944 Turbo, then its a great fast car...but the 914 gives a feel that the 924/44 cannot, the mid engine air cooled engine, totally mechanical, open top, lightweight....

i own a 924S and a 914 (driven in one)

and for sheer enjoyment, the 914 destroys the wasser cooler...but in the end, theyre both tons of fun

I love my home made 3.2 liter 914-6
Its hell of fast and you can pick up used conversions pretty cheap.
The DME injection on the 3.2 is very reliable and less hassle than carbs.
But if its only for a weekend cruiser a real six would be pretty special.

The 914's are great toys. Talk about handling on rails. The issue with any used Porsche including your 928 is finding a good example that has been well maintained and documented. A poorly maintained 944 Turbo or even a 914 can be just as much trouble as a 928 or a 911 that wasn't properly maintained.

My GTS is relatively problem free and my 911 is no problem at all. Both have a good service history and all the documentation to day one. The advantage to the 914's are they are incredibly easy to work on, and not too expensive. I can drop a 914 tranny repair the clutch and reinstall it on jack stands in the same time it takes me to do an oil change on a 928

Nothing will turn in and feel like a mid-engined car, can't fight physics. I love Boxsters and they are coming down, but are common. 944 Turbos (951) can be wicked fast, and the later versions (88S and 89) have the most developed package, and prices are coming down on those of late as well, and there are several for sale on the turbo board, the 968 is a good overall package if you like the styling. I have a 89 944 Turbo which I bought for potential and the overall structure, and they make great track cars. 968's generally cost more than the 944 or 951, and a supercharged or turbo'd 968 should be a rocket, but a bit spendy. Depends on whether or not you want NA or Turbo. The 951 is not a town car, it needs space as it feel sluggish or heavy puttsin at lights. Trub's and superchargers ain't cheap though.
It depends on how new you can afford, what type of driving experience you are looking for, and whether or not you want the bark and/or wail of the six or the rush of a turbo.

I would look at them in this order:
944S2 or Turbo
944 N/A or 924S
924 Turbo
914
924
The 944 is the best of the car you mentioned, good storage (room for golf clubs), and it has a back seat (if your family grows via a visit from the stork).

you seem to be forgetting that the 914 has not one..but two trunks...which are both quite spaceous..and even with the top in the rear trunk there is still room underneath
