I put in one of those halogen conversion lights..they are about 50 bucks and you get the lenses and the halogen bulbs...alot brighter and more efficient then those crappy sealed beam headlights.

Mine came with my 911..so the previous owner bought them and never put them on...since I upgraded to euro headlights on that car I used these on the 914. Pelican Parts has some:

I've also seen these things at your local flaps.

Also, if you want to look at paint schemes and lot's of 914's...go to www.914club.com. That sight is insane with 914 owners. There is a members "cars" thread where everybody posts their car..it's long. Also if you do a search there are several threads on various widebodies plus some folks that wanted to see multiple paint schemes (two tones).

Years ago I bought a CIBIE uprgrade kit for the headlamps, because the stock lights were indeed abysmal.
The aftermarket units had much better beam focus and were brighter. Since its a standard size round headlamp, it should be easy to find a good replacement.

trcarrera,
Hi, my experience is with a 944, but figure both cars use a 7" round headlight. Just this week, I took out the generic 7" H-4 conversion kit that I had been using (note that these werent Hellas or Cibies)...Although they were a bit better than the 20 year old original sealed beams. I even tried a number of different bulb wattages, but was just unhappy with the beam pattern, or lack thereof.
I replaced them with Sylvania Silverstars and am very pleased with their performance, especially for the price. I think I paid approx $30 for each bulb at my local pep boys. I have found the light to be crisp, white and bright.
Sylvania Silverstars
Best of luck,
-Mike
