Default Vast differences in 914 prices

Okay... This is an obviously difficult question to answer but I'm confused and need some understanding.

One can get a 2.0 914 from $2000 to $12,000. the median being about 5-6000.
If I'm looking at a $10,000 car what must it absolutly have that makes it worth that much?

A 10K 914/4 2.0 outta be pretty near superb, with only the smallest imperfections and flaws. 914 2.0s above 10K are typically special in some way...superb original paint, very low miles, Limited Editions, etc.

Would agree with above. Every so often an original 914 will come up for sale with no rust, low miles etc. Usually these stay in the family (as mine will) and you need to know them personally. If you're in the PCA region near you you get to know these cars and their owners. Fortunately or unfortunately (depending how you look at it) they don't go on the market very often. Less original though decent cars that make great drivers are out there- you just have to be patient. Ask local PCAers- also look at 914club.com

I would also agree with all of the above. A car in that range if it has not been highly modified with lot of race parts should be an orginal car. As with any car it is easy to spend money on a car but it's hard to get it out. A very nice example of a 914 should bring $10,000. To have someone build a good 2.0 engine costs at least $4000 a nice paint job at least $2000. I would sugguest look for the car that already has all the work and parts on it that you would want because a $5000 car that that isn't the way that you want it will cost the extra money any way. I would also add that I would be look for rust repairs. There are some bad repairs out there that look good but can show up when the frame is stressed.

I agree with all the posts, keep in mind that buying something that is well built and cared for to start with even if you pay a little more will save you lots of money in the long run............try and find the nicest car for the purpose you intend to use it for, ie concours, daily driver , racing......
