901 Transmission Question
Hey guys.
I've got a side shifter tranny in my car (of course, it's a 74). After having it sit for the winter months last year (2002-2003) and then firing it up in the spring time with a fresh engine, the transmission was whining more than it had ever before. 5th gear especially. The whining eventually subsided and the car ran great, except it needs a clutch (I know, should've thought of that before I put it back together), because there is clutch chatter. But since I'm always thinking ahead, and I'd really like to get a 6 cylinder engine some day, I'd also like a transmission that'll hold up great. How much do you think it would cost to get a 901 worthy of some serious horsepower and torque. Keep in mind, mine is original. Also, is it a good idea to get it rebuilt while I'm doing the clutch? I won't have the 6 for a while to come. I just rebuilt the 4
Thanks a lot

I am trying to take two and make one right now. The parts are very expensive. Just bearings are about $650.00 syncros are $200 per gear. (usually just 1st & 2nd are the worst ) I've heard that a good trans is good to 500 hp.

Nah, synchros are $50 each but the intermediate bearings are $150 a set (need a top and bottom set).
The sliders and dogteeth also are getting expensive, although only should only have to replace 1st and 2nd gears dogteeth.

$150 x 4 =$600 + $20 x 2 for the diff bearings $ 200 x 2 (1st & 2nd) = $400 You can get a whole car for that, if you want to do it right its expensive to build a trans.

I think a 901 that will handle 500hp is quite heavily modified. The number I've commonly heard thrown around is 300hp. 500hp sounds more like a 915 max capacity. Of course the amount of hp a tranny will handle has a LOT to do with how much rear tire you are running and how you drive the car. Renegade Hybrids (forget his name) has bolted small blocks up to 901's for years, but he'll tell you if you're gonna run real wide tires or slicks and do a lot of hard launches it won't last. I understand intermediate plate cracks are one of the first things to happen. You can get billet aluminum ones to take the place of the stock mag for like $400 plus the install. Hope that helps.

Hmm now let's talk about if I were to make the car use a 915? How much would that be, and what modifications would be required? I'm assuming mounts, shift linkage etc?

I highly doubt that even a heavily modified 901 could handle 500hp. The problem with the 901 is the spacing of the shafts, which is not something that can be fixed. I run a modifed 901 in my car which has a high compression 3.2 with ~270hp. My trans has a billet intermediate plate, side cover & a cooler. I doubt it could handle much more power relaibly (in fact I broke my previous 901 after 5 years on the track with the stock 3.2). In Jerry Woods' engine class, he recommended that a 901 is good up to 280hp and a 915 up to about 360hp (and anyone who built real 935 & 962 engines probably knows what he's talking about...)
