Default Howdy

Howdy all,

I've been a Porsche fan for a number of years, thanks to my boss, who has owned 4 different ones since I've worked with him (first a 911, then a 914 and 930, and now he has a 968 as of a few hours ago). Well I'm currently going to college right now in College Station TX, and my hometown is Corpus Christi. I really want to get a project car this summer, and 914s are one of my favorite cars.

My biggest problem is I can only afford to have one vehicle right now, so it would have to become pretty realiable (about 4 hour drive to College Station at 75mph). While I would love to do an engine conversion (Porsche L6 or 13b rotary), I fear that reliabilty would be not be very great, not to mention I don't have incredibly good fabrication skills. I've looked around the internet and I have found several companies that sell modified Type4s with decent power output. I've also thought about the possibility of getting the big bore kit. The use of it would probably be around 85% around town, and the rest autoX etc. Any suggestions?

Build a 2056cc motor, easy to build and will last a long time.

Man. Go for the Porsche 911 6 cylinder. If you go with a 3.0L or so its VERY, VERY (I can't emphasize how much) RELIABLE!! You can also use your stock transmission (If you have a 73 or earlier 914). Go for it.

Also: sign up for 914club.com Those guys are great.

I'd love to go with a 3.0l, I just don't know if I can afford to buy an engine like that this summer.

Ok, say I get a 2.0
-How would I go about getting it extremely well balanced? (new cranks etc?)
-What Cam/head/etc would be best for my situation?
-What places should I check out for engine rebuilds (i don't know of any locally, only place I've found on the net so far is aircooledtechnology or something similar to that)

Thanks for all the help!

Forget the -6 conversion route; WAY outta your league (i.e. $$$) at this point in your college career. Maybe something you can consider later on down the road.

Since the 914 (or ANY Porsche, for that matter) is a learning curve in-and-of itself, you wanna start off with the best example your wallet can stand. A '73/'74 2.0L would be a nice find, but don't discount a 1.7 or 1.8 in great condition.

Since this is going to be your ONLY driver, you might want to look for one with a rebuilt engine already, unless you can frequently refuel your bus pass online; taking on a rebuild or engine swap is not for the faint of heart!

Stop by Raby's Aircooled Technology and get learned up; also head over to ShopTalk Forum's Type 4rum, Aircooled Technology, and 914 Forum, Pelican Parts' 914 Forum, and The 914 Club.

Well I was looking in the 914club classifieds and found one in austin for 5grand, with some goodies for autox, and recently rebuilt engine with many 'choice' parts. There is also one in houston, for 4 grand (found on collectorcartrader) that is a weekend driver, and has had a recent rebuild by a porsche mechanic.

Lets just say I have around 2500 to play with for mods, what would you do w/ it (and lets just say it already has weber carbs).

And one last questions, what is the pricing like at aircooledtechnology? I emailed them today, but from the reply email it seems they are really busy, so I figure I'd get a quicker answer here.

All of Jake's (Raby's Aircooled Technology) engines are custom-built, so pricing depends on what ya want. How fast do you want to go?

Figure on $3.5K and up on a stock-type rebuild, and add more $$$ as your need-for-speed outweighs your wallet.

I have a 914 and I ended up using as a track car. I started with a sway bar then springs then Konis etc etc now its no good to take out around town or to take the wife out. I also have a 944, now there is a good cheap fast car. As much as I like my 914 you need a 944

Import motors doesn't have the best rep. 914 club is having a problem with registering right now.
