Default weight reduction

I'm a 914 newbie here... were they strictly steel bodied cars or were there fiberglass body parts included? What measures can be taken other than the usual stripping to tear down the curb weight... are there many replacement part manufacturers with lightweight replacements?

I have seen some glass parts bumpers, rockers, a hood that covers over the lights. I haven't seen fenders or doors but i'm sure there out there.

Check out GT Racing and a few other places. Many people are making glass and carbon fiber parts.

Something I've been wondering about, how light CAN you get a 914?

Obviously there is a point where you are going to comprimise utility, but with all fiberglass body panels, junking the heat exchangers, cutting off the roof, replacing the suspension arms with tubular aluminum copies, pulling out all the sound deadening, etc, but keeping a mostly intact interior, that sort of thing.

About 1700lbs is what a normal light weight car is. Ury914's is waaay stripped and chopped.

Wow, I didn't realize that 914s were really that light!

I've been thinking of building a 914/6 as a project car, when I'm done my V8 RX7 project.

One of the more exteme 914's I see regularly is Otto's "Rudy" car, which is a factory 914-6 with a 3.8RSR Motec powerplant, all fiberglass roadster (no roof/a-pillar), etc. It weighs around 1800lbs with cage and full race gear, and puts out well north of 350hp...

I am aiming to get my car down to 2000lbs in semi "street legal" form. My class competition weight is 2049lbs so there is no point to going much lighter than that...I would just have to add lead ballast to bring it back up.

Don't forget your cage will probably weigh 120 + lbs...

...and that weight usually includes the driver and the gas.

For example, for my 911 3.2 to weigh the race weight of 2662 lbs, my car must weigh about 2440 lbs.

Chris, that's a really nice 914 you got your hands on! How much was that when you got it? And how many miles were on the clock?
