I am looking to get a 914 project car to restore over the next year or so. What exact year is best? How much I expect to pay? Looking for all around advice on exactly what car to buy.
Thanks everyone....

73 2.0 litre is the best year to get!...but, all 914's handle really well. Even better equiped with front/rear sway bars. About the only major thing to look out for is rust below the battery tray (usually eats away the suspension console) and rust in the longitudinals. Other then that..they are a blast!

Have to admit, Jim is right on! 1973 914 2.0 is the year and model to have if you can't afford a SIX! These cars are 30 plus years old and you'll be hard pressed to find something keep up with you in the turns for the amount of $$$$ your spending on your 914! Good luck - Jay Gratton

I have a perfect restoration candidate for sale. This one is an easy restoration...its a complete, reliable driver already...Its a rare 914 Limited Edition Bumblebee. There really is NO difference between a 73 and 74 914 car...if they have the same stuff...sway bars, center console etc...The LE cars came fully equipped, and have special factory recognition.
Considering all offers until the end of December. See the webpage at this link:

More details on the LE cars are on my website at this link:

Contact me if you are interested at bowlsby@aol.com

Do yourself a favor and buy a complete car, preferably running, in as good a condition as you can afford. Something like what Jeff described (no affiliation) is a great start -- you can have a blast finishing it up but you will not be "screwed" financially as can easily happen if you buy that $200 rustbucket that could eventually cost you $20,000 (or more) to put back into cherry condition.
Focus on the 2.0L fours for the best fun and resale value if that is of interest to you; or the 914-6 if you can spring the initial investment.

Dave, I have a 73 914 1.7. The car is a bit rusty in the normal spots. I need to do something with it. I don't have the title, but you are more than welcome to come look at it and we can talk about what it would take to make it go to Dallas on your trailer.
The car has been stripped, the FI electronics are gone as are most all of the rest of the wiring.
The motor needs to be rebuild as the pistons/jugs were not useable.
The brakes need to be gone through from front to back.
PM me or give me a call (you still have my #)

I too am looking for a "project" car. I'm mostly looking for something I can do some cutting on. I want to do a "speedster" thing. It dosen't have to run, but do need all the parts there as in motor, tranny, and so on. Rust is ok, but not in the structure points. A title is a must. I'm in the Austin, TX. area. I can pick up in Dallas, Houston, or San Antonio areas. Have truck, and trailer.
Now I'm talking CHEAP here, like $500.00 area. This way if it dosen't work out the way I vision it, I'm not out big bucks.
Thanks.

I just bought a 72 914 that has the 2.0 motor upgrade with dual carbs and a complete chalon body kit on it for 1,000 bucks. I like my 944 but I have to admit a 914 is a total blast to drive. I have a guy with another 914 "project" complete and comes with an extra 2.0 engine for 500 bucks. I will be busy for a while. These cars are lot different than the old muscle cars I am used to working on..raw muscle is fun but these cars are a different ball game. I am hooked.
