Default 1976 912E question

Were the 1976 912E produced before or after Porsche started galvanizing bodies, anybody know?

Also, were the engine serial no's matched to vins, and if so, any help with the location of the engine no. would be appreciated.

Yes to my understanding all of the 1976 body cars were 100% galvanized. Encompassing the 912e.

Engine number? Look to near the aluminum mount / base of generator stand.

Need to correct the answer to your question, the first one thousand bodies of the 2099 full production run were actuall 1975 bodied and were not galvanized. The remaining bodies were in fact 1976 bodies and galvanized. This was the beginning of Porsches rust free 10 year body program.

On the 912E, it's on the driver's side a pillar, about 4" above the dash - seen from the outside.

Thanks I found it and remembered where it was after looking at my sc!

However, the number is not 17 digits and I can't run it on a vin decoder. Are all 912e vins like this?

I think 17 digit VINs (for any car) didn't start until '80 or '81. You might have luck checking the 912 registry.

Default Vin number 912E

There is in fact a second vin number located on the car it's in the trunk. Pull up your trunk liner it will be stamped in the fram just above the gas tank on the passenger side of the car it should be 10 digits long starring with 912. The last 4 digits of the number is your actual production number. Production for these cars ran from 0001 to 2099.

Yes, I found that number as well. It's the same one that's stamped on the plate on the drivers door and a-pillar.

The last 4 numbers in the VIN are the product number. What number is it? Mine is #865 out of 2099 produced.

My 912E #955 was made 01/76 from the sticker inside the drivers door and is galvanized.

My last 4 digits are 1417 on my ten digit vin. Based off the above post and especially since there is ZERO rust on the tub , including the corners of the windshield and cowling , ours are galvanized tubs. I just picked up mine this week , it’s completely stripped apart, so I can see everything and it’s dry as a bone.

What would be the source of the info on when or what production number galvanizing started? Thanks
