Have the heads off and removed the valves and have one of the exhaust valve guides that is worn. Read through the Porsche 912 hand book on how to replace and wondering if anyone else has done this or is this something that should only done by a machine shop?

Oh yes. Its at home doable. Pretty simple to do & a lay-up for a machine shop. If you have the head off then you can do the guide ~ as taking the head off is way more work.
Remember... This style of engine has been fixed and/or repaired in more empty parking lots by more empty headed hippies then any other engine.

Thanks for the encouragement, I called the one Porsche specialty machine shop in the area and he made it sound like it was going to be like doing brain surgery and he would need to email me back when he would be able to set up an appointment just for me to drop the heads off so he could evaluate them. That was 4 days ago and I still haven't heard back from him.

Go at it. Get the valve guide & look at the stuff while in hand. You will be sure to be amazed at how simple this can be. Plus, while I admire Porsche techs (I am one) any VW tech would be happy to do this with you for beer money (I am one of those too).

Its nice having a Son who is getting a Physics degree and likes to experiment. I could not believe how easy the valve guide dropped in.

We did all the rest of the valve guides this afternoon. I was amazed at how easy it was to knock the old ones out and replace with new ones. It was the one part of the engine rebuild that I had been sweating and putting off. I went so much easier then I had feared.
