Post Question for Roland K (aus FRG)

Roland,

Some time ago I asked a question about 15"x7" phone dial wheels (from a 1986 944) fitting on my 1966 912. You thought that with a 185/70 tire and wheel spacers they might fit.

My questions are this: will a 185/65 tire ( I can't find a 185/70) fit on a 7" wide rim as the tire retailer says the tire will fit rims fron 5-6.5" ?? If so, what would you suggest for a spacer size to make this setup work??

You response would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Frank Cataldo

Hello

185/65/15 have a smaller Roll diameter and so you need to adopt your speedo.

Now the "standard" rim for 185 is 5,5" and there normal allowed range is 4,5 - 6,5" wide rims but 2" is still possible. To avoid insurance issues ask the tire manufactorer.

Best is avoid all that problems by using 195/65/15 tires wich are officail foctory repalcments simce 1988.

However fiting them on old cars needs to check the clearance and limit the stering angle.

Now 7" Phonedails on front will need spacers depending on your hub.

First step would be to clarify what rims you have.

Phonedails where made in 23 ( 951... ), 36 ( 91... ) and 52mm Backspace ( 944... )

Guten abend, Roland.

I have 15" X 7" phone dials off an 1986 944 with the 52mm backspace. Clearance in the rear might work ok but the front tires (currently with 225/50/15s) rub right away. A friend (also originally from the FRG) suggested using 195/65/15s on the 7" rims. I thought a 185 would give a little more clearance but the 195, as you say, makes more sense. Anyway, I hope this helps. I know, not matter what, I would need spacers on the front to get enough clearance.

By the way, do you know if all 1966 912s have factory mounting points for seat belts in the rear? I have belts but have not found the mounting holes as of yet.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Frank

Roland,

Sorry, the wheels are from a 1986 944, are 7x15 and have 23MM backspace, not the 52mm I indicated in the previous response.

Grusse,

Frank
