Hello
If you have to ask....
Yes it is possible, the type 4 has a very solid bottom end and had been done.
At least with several 914´s.
912 would be easier to route and has more space but i think finally the costs will be similar to a normal powerupgrade ( ***** are not for free except on US muscle )

Anything is possible...But I think your better off doing a BigBore or engine rebuild.
Several companies offer BigBore conversion kits for the air cooled 4. I've seen kits over 2176 cc! I think one of these engine rebuilds with some nice webbers and a mild cam will give you as much power as a turbo...without all the problems.
I don't know if I can mention the name of the company on here, but one well known Porsche and VW parts dealer is offering fully rebuilt 1776cc engines (VW which will bolt right in) for $1650. All you need is some carbs and your set...not cheap...but a whole lot easier than experimenting with a turbo.
I'm looking into early 911s and 912s. Die to cost, I think I am going to go for a 912 and do a performance engine rebuild. At the end, I'll have similar performance to an early 911 for a lot less $$$$.
