SPG roller Crank
If you could help please. I am rebuilding an engine for my 65 911 and as a result I am trying to raise some cash to keep the expense out of the "Family budget" AKA eyes of the spouse. I have a few parts I have accumulated over the years and one of them is an SPG Roller Crank from a 912. After inspection from a local expert on 356's and four cams I was informed that the crank was never used in a race car due to the mods that dont exist that would normally be found in a race installed crankshaft. Since I am not familiar with a 912 and racing engines of the 912 I need some feedback. Any feedback will be interesting but specifically the following: do people still use these RollerCranks and also what is one in good shape worth? Lastly whats the best method used to market one? thanks Jon in Delaware

Your thinking then it's only application was in the 356 engines? Its an aftermarket manufacture of the same crank that was used in the four Cam engines. Thanks jon

could be.. i have only heard of roller cranks used in 4 cam aplications andi think some 356 type 616 engines (super 90s or normals maybe?). if its a 4 cam crank, then i dont think it would fit in a type 616, be it a 912 or 356 type 616. i would still check on the 912bbs, and specifically ask sterling or john benton, as both of those would know 100%.

SPG did indeed make a 912 roller crank for a time, but unless you have a set of new main bearings as part of the package, it will be difficult to market.
SPGs were more popular among the early VW crowd, before counterweighted stroker cranks were introduced. They allowed quite a high rpm to be run without beating out the case. But the 912 unit has a very small cross section compared to the VW of the same era ... not very strong when coupled to increased horsepower.
