considering a 912

yup, exactly!
they can be daily drivers. but its impractical, compared to a honda that you just put gas in and go. you need to constantly maintain them and thats just the nature of the beast.
you need to look at dave hillmans website. he drives his 912 daily in the bay area. he has kept an almost fanatical record of everything.. including how much it costs him to drive it every year, down to gas, maintenence, etc. anything he needs to put in the car $$ wise, its recorded. also he records and documents every maintenence thing he does, or has done, and takes detailed measurements and pphotographs. -not only is he a 912 nut, his passion is photography, and i believe he is an engineer by trade, which means numbers and data are like crack to him, and he can never get enough data. above all else though, dave is a super nice guy. check out his website and i can promise you, that you will learn alot.

Dave also runs the 912 regisry forum,
www.912BBS.org
i highly recomend that site too, as you will find info on just about anything you can immagine that is 912 related.

Well, I did not get to see it last weekend due to holidays. Hopefully this weekend.
I am handy with a wrench, as I have been maintaining my 928 for the past five years in addition to my mercedes 300D's (recently sold).
I am thinking that there is something wrong with me that I can't be happy with the vehicles that I have, but this sounds like something that should not be passed up and I would enjoy getting something like this back in shape.
Hillman's site is interesting, but does surprise me in at least one aspect. Just from glancing at the site, he lists 22 mpg in one chart. Is this normal, or indicative of a problem? I'm sure reading the site in depth would answer the question, but I am curious what other owners are getting. I would expect a car like this to get at least the high 20's on the highway...at least as indicated by this chart:

Thanks Again,
Neil

Dave is having issues with his remanufactured carbs. before he was getting about 26 -27 mpg i believe, with the remanufactured solexes, he is not. he is not happy about this.
i suggest visiting 912bbs.org and asking most of the 912ers there

I get 6 to 7 MPG on the track. Wide Open Throttle 99% of the time and the rest is spent standing on the brake. Pound for pound a modern car will get better MPG. Back to the computer and injection thing.
Are you handy and can do much of the small stuff yourself?

I'm currently getting about 19 MPG around town. But I have only owned my 69 912 for about three weeks now. I have rebuilt the webbers but have not got them "dialed in" yet. However, in my experience (this is not my first 912 or Porsche) I don't think I've ever gotten the 28 to 32 MPG that some guys on the 912 registry site claim to get. Still, I can live iwth that mileage (19MPG) since I don't drive far to work.

I've had my '66 912 since 2002 and it's been my only car during the past 4 years. I drive it to work every day 14 miles (same distance as the Nurburgring!). I don't usually take it on vacations or long trips simply because my wife's Subaru has so much luggage space and a better stereo. As 148K miles it suffered a shattered valve guide which led to a 1720cc conversion (pistons and cylinders) and a valve job.
I'm planning for a new Porsche in 2007, so this'll be my daily driver until next April. I live in the Philadelphia area and have driven it in the cold rain and snow from time to time.

Well, I STILL have not seen the car yet. We see each other at work, and seem to keep missing each other after hours. I actually get the sense that he just does not want to sell it (or else I would have been able to see it by now). I guess that is OK for the moment since somehow we have an orphaned 2000 BMW x5 taking up space in the garage that we need to find a home. I suspect he will get more motivated as the holidays approach.
Should this deal actually materialize, I do have some outlaw features that I would like to try with it, such us upgrading to fuel injection (something along the lines of megasquirt and throttle bodies that can use the stock manifolds) and upgrading the A/C with a rennaire kit. I consider myself to be handy, but working these ideas would be an education for me.
I have been lurking on 912bbs.org , and (though awkward to use) it certainly has a wealth of information. The tool kit thread caught my attention, as the "seller" said that it has the original tool kit. It would be nice to actually see this thing.
Thank you all for sharing your thoughts.

OK, I finally got to see this car LAST WEEK!
He admitted to putting me off because his neighbor was interested, but I kept bugging him about it whenever I passed him in the hallways. Finally, unprompted, he volunteered that he was ready for me to see it. It is very complete and very original, down to the radio. The only exception that I spotted was an aftermarket steering wheel.
It would have to be gutted and sent to the paint shop, but it does appear to be free of structural rust. I am on the fence regarding buying this, as I have other things going on, but it seems like I would regret passing it up.
