Question 912 fuel mileage

What kind of MPG are you getting from your 912 and what octane are you using? I had a 1969 912 years ago and am looking at one that's for sale here locally to drive daily. It has a 5 speed and webbers. Just wondering what I can expect for MPG if I keep my foot out of it most of the time. I really don't remember what my old 912 use to get.

about 26 mpg is avg for me with a hot cam, and a 'less than stock engine' with a hot cam, JE p&c, full flow, solexes, light weight pully, and other goodies meant for HP . why dont you ask the guys on www.912bbs.org they can tell you what they get too (and alot of guys post there!)

Hoffman 912: Thanks for the response. So I guess I could even do better without the go fast stuff you have on your car? Even still 26MPG is better than I thought, thanks. On this car with 110,000 miles on the original engine would you use Premium (92 or 93 here in Florida) or can I use a mid grade. I hate to try to save some money and be listening to pings and knocks on the first tank.

gotta use the highest grade available, 92 or 93 if your state has it. These engines have a high compression ratio, and if you use low or midgrade you will get pinging (which will destroy these engines)

I think now I remember running 93 octane in my first 69 912. But that was, if you can believe it, 27 years ago! The memory takes a bit to recall such details! Thanks again for the help.

I get 20mpg - it drops to 18 if I autocross that week.
