is this a fair deal? White '69 912 clean for 8.9k
Guys,
I just looked at this car today.
Text of add (reposting for archival purposes)
1969 Porsche 912; $8,950; very good condition; 4 cyl; 5 speed; daily driver; new battery; heads recently rebuilt; total miles unknown; odometer stopped at 49,000 miles; I have owned since 1999; located in California, serious buyers reply to email.
My analysis/impressions
* car is overall extremely clean
*Very good interior
-no cracks in dash very shiny
-seats are cream (no rips, some wear)
-rests of interior including rear seats in a kind
of beige weave (nice)--this looks new/redone
*Front /Hood area
-There is rust below the battery compartment
and it extends (but looks surfacy) to where
the spare is -all around there
-There are very light rust lines that can be seen
when you lift the (hood?) underneath the hood
along the seam
*Exterior
-paint in good condition overall, definately no
new paint job needed
-owner suspects it has had at least one repaint
and if so, theymatched the white extremely well
-There are a few smudge marks (not sure
what) but overall the body is in excellent
shape no dings
-There is one spot that the size of a silver
dollar on the rear above the engine compartment
lid were the paint is bubbled up/ something (rust?)
underneath there, owner not sure it was there
when he bought it
-I looked under the car and could not see any rust
anywhere
*Engine
-The engine has 2 carbs and has had the
cylinder heads rebuilt within the last 5 years
-engine compartment immaculate--you could
eat dinner back there-that's how clean it was
-sounds good
-new muffler
*Other
-true mileage is unknown current owner put 20k
on it in the last 5 years (speedo was stuck at 49k
when he bought it)
-records only back to 1999
-owner has brand new low-profile tires on the original
fuchs aluminum wheels.
Asking price is $8,900 and others are also coming by
to look.
My question is-- in this exact condition, what is this car
worth? What of the issues notes should be taken car
of if I wanted to keep this car as an antique and have
it increase in value? On the other hand, I am looking
more for a daily driver anyway, this is probably a really
good car for that...
OK thanks. Marvin.

Marvin-
Send this over to the 912bbs.org guys, and you will get replies. I just bought a 76 912E, so I am new to the game. Here is my .02...
*rust under battery tray is familiar, and needs to be taken care of, because it could go below the surface.
*rust under or in front of the spare tire might mean new front pan.
*clean engine compartment means that the engine has been removed, arear cleaned, probably from the rebuild, and should be good for a long time.
*Sounds like a good overall car, with a little TLC you should be ready to go, and have everything working. You can always get the gear fixed for the odometer to work, or get another speed/odo.
*Price seems reasonable, but point out a few things, and give him something you are will to pay. Remember, a 911 or 912 of that generation was not galvanized, and phrone to rust.
