Default 912 power

what things can be done to a 912 motor to give it more power to hang with the newer porsches, with the consideration that it is a 4 cylinder.

Check wtih the Emorys http://www.partsobsolete.com/ - they have this crazy 911 engine converted to 4 cylinders - 150 horses or so. Quite expensive too.

Have you considered a "cheap" Typ IV motor? Not original, but you could really cram the horses in there...

you can run a hotter cam that will give more power, you can also raise your compression -either fly cut or use racing pistons and shim it a bit so you wont have to use racing fuel (ie take 11:1 racing pistons and lower em to say 10.3:1 or somthing to make it a bit more hospitable to road use).

you can also use light weight parts. a csp pully is same diamiter as stock but only weighs 2lbs. use an aluminum oil cooler to lower weight, a full flow oil filter to better protect engine, use skat ultra light crank and either csp 356 magnum rods or carillo rods.. lighter & stronger. also the type of pistons you use makes a big difference -shastas and arias pistons weight much less and are much stronger than npr kits (all 3 examples are big bore)

you could also twin plug a 912 engine. doing this to a mild 912 engine will give it about 120 hp. just think about doing it to a hopped up motor.

also you can gut the car, and remove anything you dont absolutly have to have to save weight or replace with lighter parts. saving weight will add big time. use real fuchs or mahle gasburner wheels.. reducing unsprung weight will really help.
using larger valves (nissan valves i think some racers use?) can help.

your best bet is to get duane spencers book on 912s. its geared towards building 912s with power for auto-x and racing, but also applies to a stock street one too.. it talks about what kind of gains you can get from what kind of parts.

the biggest thing is having it put together right. i would suggest having a pro do it. it needs to be machined and balanced to as tight a spec as possable for optimum performance of what you put into it.

i also recomend you contact john benton on www.912bbs.org or http://bentonperformance.com/

since the older porsches shared the same engine platform as a vw. have people ever put a turbocharged type 1 vw motor? there are vw motors putting out 300-500+ hp .

eh.. ok im going to try to not sound like a snobbish purist.

these engines are not on the same platform, infact not even close when you really look at it. the only ones that came close to sharing the same platform were the early pre A 356s. Now the philosophy of the 616 912 and 356 engine is based upon what was done with VW, but is much more evolved and more complex. (ok its not brain surgury but the differences are night and day).

That and why in gods name would you want to put a VW type 1 in a 912!? do you really need 300-500+ HP in a swb 901 body!? Seriously i would think it would be close to suicide with that much power. not only that but a type 1 with that much power wont last 50 hours.

just have your original 616 engine built up with shastas and a 288 degree cam, and give it higher compression (either fly cut or use racing p&c and shim them down to 10:1) and you will be pleasently supprised. it will not cost a whole lot more than the std rebuild to do that, and you will have approx 120-130 hp (what the 911s had the same year). plus with how light they are when stock, i dont see any reason why you would have problems keeping up.. unless youre thinking about drag racing it, which would be plain nuts.

I have run that formula motor for 5 years on the track, it is still running strong and I scare the C**p out of a bunch of 911s.

To start, make sure you get the car up to par with its original self. Carbs refurbished and properly jetted, a good distributor with timing set up just right. (some run faster with less advance!) Compression on all 4 up to spec. Even the little things like making sure that the throttles on the carbs open at exactly the same time when the linkage starts to move. How about taking a mirror and peering down into the carbs to make sure that the butterflies are full on, all the way open when the go pedal is all the way down. Balancing the carbs too. A good free flowing exhaust..... makin sure that the carb preheat is blocked off so the air getting to the carbs is as cool as possible. In the same thought, make sure the engine tin is secure against the seal to make sure that the motor is pulling cool air from the lid vent and not hot air from the exhaust.

None of this stull will make your car into a super fast hot rod, but many of these things will effect the seat of your pants feel and make the drive more spirited!

Enjoy!
