Default Red generator light coming on .....

Last night when I turned on my headlights the red lights in the dash came on. Also with the headlight load on the system the turn signal sequence slowed way down. Without the extra load of the lights everything works fine. Voltage regulator / generator ???? Where should I start?

I had a similar sittuation with my 69’ about 6-7 years ago. It ended with my battery not charging. I ended up rebuilding the generator which was actually quite fun.

It would seem the culprit should be the generator or the voltage regulator. Interesting that an alternator has never been produced for these cars. I have heard that someone out there will take the existing generator housing and convert it to an alternator.

I’ve heard Benton will put alternators on his builds if you request it. Zims used to have a conversion kit, but I’m not sure if it’s still available. About 5-6 years ago it cost $1200-1500, but now, plus inflation it’s probably much more.

Is there a detailed diagram showing the ground points on the 912? Pictures would be great!

I have heard that someone takes the generator, guts it and builds an alternator out of it. A lot of $ for a weekend driver. If Dr Porsche had built 5 million 912s like Henry Ford did the Model A there would be alternators available.
