Default 912 5-speed won’t shift into 4th or 5th

Hi all. This just developed, but my ‘68 912 won’t shift into 4th or 5th gears. The shift rod linkage and it’s bushings behind the front seats looks good and seems very solid. The trans moves easily between 1st, reserve, 2nd and 3rd, but just seems to no longer “notch over” to the 4th 5th side of the shift pattern.

when I grab the rod between the shift lever and the bushing connector that goes back to the transmission I can lift it up and down maybe 1/16”, which seems reasonable, but may that indicates an issue?

Is it possible that the bushings under the shifter lever itself might cause this issue? Thanks for any advice.

Did you get this figured out? Starting at the shift coupler would be a good route.

Had a similar problem with my 912 and it was the shift coupler, start with that, it’s not a big item hopefully that’s the issue

This happened to me. The car had a short shifter in it which I converted bac to stock. The bolts used to attach the shifter plate were too long. Went to ace hardware bought shorter bolts and problem solved for under a dollar.
