Default Small Oil leaks 930- typical?

Debate with one of my Porsche friends-
All 930s leak a few drops of oil, no matter how well maintained, engine rebuilds, etc. Something to do with build tolerances of the 1970s/1980s...
what say the forum? Is that typical/true?

hahahaha,... I gotta laugh at post #2. First post ever,... and that's what Saoirse32 get's for his answer.

Saoirse32,... I would not say that it has to be the 100% rule that all of them leak even just a drop or too.

They didn't leak for YEARS right from the factory when new....

And now many decades later,... I would say the answer lies with TIME.

If the motor has NOT been rebuilt / resealed, then absolutely it will leak.

If the motor HAS indeed been rebuilt, then it depends on whether the shop used the correct sealants (for example Loctite 574 on the case halves)...

This is a great thread to read, which will give you some insight into rebuilds (good & bad)....

https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...64-engine.html

so in my example, even though mine is a 1991 964 Turbo, it really is {essentially} the same 3.3 bottom end right,... and it has not leaked a drop in the past 14 years since it's full engine reseal.

So which one of you had the better answer?? Pls do tell.

They often leak, yes.
Specially as we often switch oils and brands, and switch to semi or full synthetics causing those gaskets to shrink and swell at different rates --> leaks.

They don't leak. They mark their territory.

Yes, a switch to syn oil from dino oil and your sure to get leaks. I tried Brad Penn in the race car and after one weekend I had leaks. went back to VR-1 and all was right again in my little world. The Brad Penn is part synthetic so that must be the part that was leaking

Yes, I spent too much time on this topic a while back and learned as much as I could.

After a fresh rebuild, I'd say pick your oil and stick with it.
For the folks that have bought a used car, if you can help it stick with what the previous owner had used.
The swelling and shrinkage cause havoc on them...

Anyhow, I have 3 air cooled Porsches right now and they all leak.

I've owned one turbo that didn't leak after I spent $14k to fix all the leaks- the other five leaked a little oil.

My 83 SC cab leaks, My 76 930 leaks. Neither has been rebuilt. But my 97 GT3 leaks just a tiny bit too when sitting too long.

I guess I'm just not lucky enough or haven't spent enough $ to keep any of mine from leaking!

I think the dry sump has something to do with it.
