Cheapest wheels for Fall/Winter/Rain?
#16
Lomotpk, not sure if it came out the right way, but I was just trying to make a point that original 930 fuchs seem to be worth a little more than 951 fuchs. I guess it's because its a very common upgrade for people with SC's and Carrera's like Trader said. It seems that people with the 944's try to go with a newer look and people with 911's and 930's like that classic look. I'm guilty, I had a 944S2 and my wheel of choice was a 17" 993 wheel.

No harm done, I actually was hoping that you COULD put some lower priced 951 wheels on a 930.
Like I said I'm only looking for some cheap skinny wheels for the winter...

Thanks for the comments guys...
I wasn't 100% sure that they would be the correct offset (yes, for my 951), because mine is an '86 and that one year needs a (I believe) 23mm offset. Later 951's need the 50-55mm offset that all the later cars take.
Lot's of early 944/951's go with spacers and later model wheel upgrades, and I thought I would have to go that route to avoid higher prices of the "rarer" wheels.
The seller said he had used these to upgrade his '83 Carrera. Because they had been on an earlier car, I took the chance. He took them off, had them refinished, put Dunlop SP sports on and apparently never remounted them. They look new in the fotos. He seemed upset that he didn't get more and I don't blame him one bit.
I have only today completed arrangements for shipping, so obviously I have not SEEN them as yet. Yes, my fingers are crossed in hopes that they are as good as they appear. The upside of course, is that if they DON'T fit, I should be able to get my money back if/when I sell.
Again, my plans are to use these on my 951. The Fuchs will be for street duties. I'm hoping the black will look good with the white paint! I got them with intention of putting track only tires on the original phone dials as they are a little rough - but fine for the track...
BTW, I think the Fuchs were avail as an option on all the 944/951 cars (They were on my '85 944). Also bear in mind that the 930's came with 16x9 inch rears - not 8's. Eric, you say that your early 930 came with 8's - perhaps you're right. My '86 had 9's. The turbos were the only car that had 16x9 inch Fuchs and that is why they are very rare - and quite expensive. No Fuchs are cheap, but those 9 inchers are highly sought after by both 911 and 944/951 folks.
When I get the Fuchs, I'll bolt them up to the 911 Turbo and just see how they fit and post the results on this forum. They may indeed make viable alternative wheels for snow/rain/winter setups... And if they do - then that means the phone dials (16x7/8) should work as well, and you can buy those for next to nothing...
But I don't think anything could be uglier than a 930 with skinny phone dials... Ugh!

I believe the 951 8's are offset to slip under an narrow body 911 better and thats what makes them higher priced. Obviously there are a lot of narrow body 911 guys that want the wider wheel without the hassel.

Fuchs Lesson...
An update to an old thread...
As I previously posted, I bought a set of Fuch's - 16 x 7/8's - on Ebay for my 951. I thought a Fuchs was a Fuchs - I was wrong.
The Fuchs wheel(s) sold as an option with a 944/951 had 951 part numbers. The 911 Fuchs wheels have 911 part numbers and ARE different - they have less clearance for the 951 calipers. I wish I had checked page 215 of Bruce A's book before I bought. Great chart of Fuchs fitments.
The wheels I bought are 911 wheels and won't fit my '86 951 without spacing them out 10mm. That's too much for my tastes. The offset is correct, but they rub the calipers.
So they are going up for sale as of now - w/o tires.
Eric930 - you still interested? They are in great shape - I'd say 8.5 of 10.
BTW - they DID bolt right up to my 930. They don't fill the fenders very well (They had 225/245 tires on), but they should work well for winter tire use on these cars. Just for kicks I drove it for a couple of weeks. After the 18's, it rode like a Cadillac!
Bottom line guys - are these wheels really worth $1500 - 2000?
Thx as always-
M
