Help Seeking 930 Non-Sunroof
Been asked a lot lately, how many Non-Sunroof 930’s were produced? Porsche doesn’t provide records on them and because they are such a tough find it’s not something that’s an easy answer.
My intent is not to start a thread about what’s good or bad about the non-roof configuration but I am hoping to understand what years they were most popular as well as what the RoW vs. North American destinations played.
Please post Model Year and VIN (with build date if possible) as well as any pictures you may have.
My 1979 NA 2/79 Build 930
VIN #9309800395

Most US spec 930 had S/R's, many ROW cars did not. Beyond simple generalizations I can't be much help. PCA may have a 930 registry, there is one on FB as well but not much help. There is a good 3.0 turbo registry, that might help.

Hey Bud, I think Porsche/VW North America specified all US cars have this "option" unless otherwise ordered off. I think the culture of these cars on both sides of the Atlantic were very different. Euros have always put an emphasis on the driver oriented experience while in the US it's always been about the amenities and driving the car thru valet. Yes this is a generalization. US cars got A/C as as standard equip while in RoWs cars it was an option. I think Porsche NA thought these "options" standard or not were a must when selling a $30-$45k. My '77 has only one pricey option and that's the sunroof, no limited slip, sport seats, or even right side mirror. It was a Stoddards showroom car and not a specifically ordered for a customer. I think your search will find a larger proportion of RoW cars without a sunroof. Your car always look great...

Tony,
Thanks for the complement.
There's likely much merit in thinking the 930 was loaded unless specified. People were paying as much for a 930 as they would have paid for a decent house in most locations during the '70's. By 1979 Porsche was charging $850 for a sunroof, so, what the hay was another couple thou for a few extra options?

The only way to have a definite answer is to build a database with all 930's produced and their equipment codes.
Then you extract the ones without M650 code.
This "was" possible for the 1980 to 1989 model year cars, but it is really complicated to cover the previous ones because there is no online database, so you have dig into Porsche archives...
I said it was, because it seems to be impossible now with the last version of the PET.

I recently sold a Grand Prix White over Carrera Red 1987 930 with sunroof delete. It killed me to sell it as I knew it was a unicorn, but ultimately it was in to far down the driver quality road for my taste. I thought about doing a full resto as I LOVED the color combo and sunroof delete, but did finally come to my senses as have learned that personally I only LOVE original cars. I can really like restored examples, but I never want to keep them long term.

Although hard to see, that '80 930 actually has a sunroof (top right corner of picture). But, what a stunning color combination in Guards Red with the brown Pasha seats.
