Default 930 Rebuild

Hi gents, I've narrowed it down to two shops, Sam Shalala Racing Services (formerly Pro Technik) in Houston, and Scott Mattison, of "Sccott's Autohaus" in Georgetown, TX.

We are planning on sending two cars at the same time, both 87's, for stock engine/tranny rebuilds. Any input, recommendations, etc are welcome. Thanks.

While farther away, might be worth your while to talk to Ed Mayo at Mayo's in Ft Worth. Either take it to him or ask his opinion.

A fried of mine used Scott's Autohaus for racecar support, and I thought my friend indicated that Scott was going to retire. You might check again, however my info may be inaccurate as well.

If you have the patience, contact Jim Buckley at Buckley Racing in Fort Worth. Jim does great work on the 78-83SC motors and is a constant winner in his Euro "E" car in PCA Club Racing.

Finding folks who know how to work on 930's is tough. Parts are hard to come by (I've just completed my own 79 930 rebuild last year). You DO want someone who actually knows the turbocharged motor though. There are enough subtle differences with the normally-aspirated cars that you can encounter issues if the rebuild is not done correctly.

There is a machine shop here in Dallas that does great cylinder head work. I'll keep looking around for you, but pickings are pretty slim.

If you have the time, I would consider checking with Steve Weiner. You may wait a little longer, but you can be assured the rebuild will be done properly using all the correct parts.

Good luck!

Toby

Thanks Toby. I'll ask around. Talked to Sam Shalala, he knows his stuff. At my request, he quoted an estimated price of around $12-$18K, depending on condition of parts, etc. Is this a typical figure? I'd figure as much.

That's labor only, correct? Parts will drive the price in all kinds of crazy directions. I probably spent that much in parts, reconditioning of turbos, recurving distributors, adjustable WUR's, etc.....

Well, according to Sam, it's for the whole deal. He quoted $8K labor.
Car's going there this Saturday. I'm keeping it bone stock, nothing crazy.

I spent about 27-35k all in, my initial estimate was also 15-20. A lot of "while you're in there" stuff, but it ads up fast, especially bone stock as those parts are harder to $ource.
Time is the other thing, I'd double whatever they told you for time and cost to be on the safe side.
