Newbie looking at a 930
Hi everyone. New guy here, first post.
Looking to buy my first Porsche and doing my research. There is a lot of knowledge on this forum that I hope to tap into.
I had narrowed my search to a 911 3.2 Carrera or a SC and have been actively looking for awhile, when through a friend of an acquaintance, I have stumbled on the potential opportunity on a 79 930. I have very little details so far on the car. The current owner has had it for 10 years and put about 10K miles on it. It has been garage kept. Before that it was stored in a barn for who knows how long. Current mileage is under 15K, "runs great". Some modifications have been made as the claimed hp is much higher than stock. The owner would rather not sell, but needs the money, he is difficult to reach. I hope to get the VIN, more details, maybe a picture. I won't be able to get the car inspected. If I go to see it, either I take it there and then or walk away.
From what I have read the big money items are
engine rebuild $5-15K
redo the entire interior $5K
body respray $10
whole body redo $20K
If I assume it needs a partial rebuild, some interior and a respray ( from the meagre description I have so far, I don't think all of this will be necessary, but to be safe (am I being safe?), lets say it needs $20K for those items.
What else should I be considering?
suspension $ ?
brakes $ ?
transmission $ ?
misc $ ?
What do you suggest I look for?
obvious things:
check the body for rust, repairs, repaint, welds, body panel alignment etc
check all electrical, lights, door latches, tire wear ( how do I check brake pads/rotors?)
oil drips or leaks from the engine
does it smoke when running, does it shift through all gears OK. Never having driven anything like this, I don't know what the engine is supposed to sound like. Do people still recommend shorting out each spark plug as a quick and dirty compression test? Can you even reach the plugs with the motor running to do this?
Ideally, I should take a knowledgeable mechanic along, but it is a good 6 hour drive one way, I don't know anyone I can rope into doing that.
Advice greatly appreciated.

Welcome...Hmm you have a lot here, it's a little vague and you need pictures. People on this forum can extrapolate a lot of info off of one clean pic. Personally it ultimately comes down to how original the car is and can be. Paint, interior, body, ect. The true value is in original, unmolested cars. You have a opportunity to buy a special car, and you're in a much different league of value and rarity compared to a 3.0, 3.2 911. Your welcome to email me at (my username)@yahoo.com and we could talk shop. Good luck
