American cars still lack the build quality of European cars, although in recent years they have made great advancements.
The Vette is a very fast, great handling car. It is also put together very cheaply, as it always has been. Why would I drop $40,000+ on a car that has an interior that looks like it was thrown together out of the GM spare parts bin?
I have a friend who swore up and down he would never buy a Ford product, he was Chevy all the way. He looked at some F-body cars and said they were all falling apart and were built terribly poorly. He then went out and bought a Mustang GT.
One could build a 944 turbo that would easily run with a C5 for 1/2 the money. A 928 could be put together quite cheaply as well.
And yes, I would rather drive my 944 than a new C5. The value is in having a vehicle that you don't see on every street corner. I see at least 10 Vettes a day, and they are becoming too common. Obviously, the Vette would get more attention than a 944, but who cares?
Face it, why do you think GM is phasing out the Camaro and Firebird.....the Corvette is selling so well they won't need them anymore.
I'll reserve comment on the GT40 until I see one for real. For now the 928 does a fine job, as it has for the last 20 years.

Maybe $32,000 to build a C5, no way it is done for $3200. Nonetheless, it is obviously a mass produced General Motors vehicle. Rest assured, they are making good margin on them.

The PCA Germany region had another slalom meisterschaft last weekend with a Z06 in attendance. Looking at the times posted to the web, the Z06 did not fair that well. As a matter of fact, it appears as most (75%) of the Porsches ran better times IMHO. I know driver experience matters, but not all Porsche drivers were pro's either.
All the GM guys complained about the brakes being completely inadequate for autobahn driving as well.
Porsches do cost more, but they last and last.

For all you K27 quick spool folks, not to worry. I just emasculated a new zo6 off the line. All he could say at the next light was "you got me" and oh by the way, were those flames out of your tailpipe when you let off ? The car sounded better than it ran, quick to be sure, but certainly not a legendary performer. Modify, modify ,modify, and remember power to weight ratio.

OK,
In terms of lap times, the Z06 is more than a match for any street going Porsche ever made period.
I just sold my 2001 Z06 which I raced for almost 2 years (got it in August 2000).
At Willow Springs I was able to beat very seiously prepared (Andial) 993 Twin Turbos with known, good drivers (Jim Brady). The Z06 in total stock form on a hot day with Hoosier on the stock wheels was able to run 1:30's at Willow. With sway bars and bigger wheels I ran 1:28's
Here is a link to some times for ButtonWillow. Anyone who has run config #1 clockwise faster, in a 930, let me know.

The Z06 is very good. Just not all that inspiring. The breaks are great, but you need to buy new front rotors every other race weekend. But, they only cost $85...
Now, what am I driving now?? A 14,000 mile 1987 930 because it is hard to drive, because it looks great, because it is hand-made... With a 600HP motor going in, all ERP suspension, JRZ's, etc. it should also be fast.
All cars have their strengths and weaknesses. Cost, build quality, blandness, etc.
