930 vs. Z06
#16
I've got a slightly modified 91 Turbo (exhaust and .8 bar) and recently ran with a Z06 on the track (not sure if it was one of the brand new ones). I was able to pull him on the straights and also the corners as long as I was on boost exiting the corners. I passed him early in the session. But I think with the right driver, he would have been passing me. Over all the cars were very well matched...just different <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

I agree with Geoffrey. The Z06 gains all of its ground during the time that our cars are waiting for the boost to get going.
On a tight track, the Z06 wins more easily because has all of its power available, yet our 930's have a "power delay".
I also agree that our cars are more challenging and fun to drive. But then again, I've never driven a Z06.

No doubt that the Z06 has horsepower, but its still a car based upon production line technology. In the right hands, I would put my money on the investment and performance potential of a modified 930. Get rid of the turbo lag, no problem. Wait to see how a Z06 runs after twenty years of driving.

As I posted earlier, a 996 TT has trouble keeping up with a stock Z06. You're more likely to be running with them than a Z06 on a track day, so that's your point of comparison. If you're not able to keep up with a stock 996 TT, you'll have trouble with a well driven Z06 too.

Gang,
The one thing that I can certainly confirm is that the 02 Z06 is no 01. These new versions are ALL that. Those of you that know me know I am a die hard turbo HP ****, but I have seen the new ones cracking the very VERY low 12s right out of the box. The 02 carries a lot of changes and is a real car and demands respect. The brakes still suck, but the car finally has merits. For those that want the power of a new TT and don't want a 120K price tag then the 50K NEW Z06 is the way to go. That extra cash buys a lot of justification as well as Brembos.

That ¼-mile is impressive for a stock car. Let's see what the new 500-hp Viper does out of the box. These V8's have a lot of bottom end grunt, I still think that in the upper speed ranges, like on the highway, they can't run like a 930. I'd like to see the 0-150 mph numbers for the Z06 compared to a modified 930. With that said, I kind of wish Porsche put more emphasis on bare-bones, lightweight, no-frills performance on the new Turbo, like Chevy did with the Z06. To me it looks like a luxury car. I'm sticking with my '86.

George,
What we are seeing is for the first time GM has underrated the Vette (Z06) They have never done that in the past. FWIW My modified 79 pushed to the max you can on a 3.3 was cracking 1/4s in 11.8 and toping out at about 187mph. Everything out there suggest the Z06 is on it. I would think that for little money the gains the Z06 could receive would be huge. Funny, Porsche is overrating for the first time and GM underrating. What is this world coming to?

that's seem to be correct. I went to the c5 board and was reading that some of the 02 z06's were pulling around 365-375 at the wheels stock.

Who cares....the Vette is still put together like a child's tinker toy creation. In 20 years they will be just like the other Vette's out there. The only ones I like are the 60s vintage cars.
I hope to be within striking distance of any of this stuff once I get my fuel system mods done next week. Ever see the look on a 996 driver's face as an 81 928 pulls away from him? The best part is mine cost a whole lot less, too! Right now it is @ 13.6 @ 113 MPH. I think I am giving up at least 30 HP due to a rich mixture on the top end. Hopefully I don't detonate! Sometimes the older stuff can be very fast! It is also fun to play with. I learn something new every time I tinker.
I'd drive a normally aspirated 944 before any Corvette. Call me a car snob, but I think the build quality of the Porsche has always been better than any American car made. I would not trust a plastic car in any kind of substantial crash. Let's face it, none of us ever drive at super speeds anyway. As long as the car accelerates to 100 quickly, what else do you really need?
Plus, I'm tired of seeing Vettes, Boxters, 996s, etc. What ever happened to the character of a sports car? Why would I want what everybody else has. Not much new stuff out there with any character anymore. Ferrari, Lotus, Lambo......still making stuff that is limited in production and has character.
I met a guy who was trying to sell an 89 911 turbo to get a Boxter...........????? I just don't understand.

John.......come on.....you would rather drive an own a normally aspirated 944 OVER any Corvette. Thats sheer 100% automotive snobbish lunacy.
The new C5 corvettes are super quality safe cars and a good value for the money. Build quality is 2nd to none especially considering early 924s and 944 N/A cars.
Wait till the super-cool 2004 Ford GT40 comes out...... please dont say "I'd rather have any 1978-1982 Porsche 928 over any FORD GT40"!
