I'm interested in installing new cams in my 930 to improve lower end performance. I've heard that the SC's provide the most low end torque at the expense of top end performance. I've heard the 964's are a more popular grind due to their not being so extreme bottom-end. What about SC 330's? Also, will any of these help improve torque while off-boost (1000-3000rpm)?
Also, where can I get these grinds specifically for a 930? I've heard that actual SC and 964 cams lack a certain do-hickey required on turbos (sprocket or something or other).
Talk to Web Cam Inc. They were very helpful to me and gave me a great description of why. I had 964 cams with my K29 and headers and was very happy. My new 3.6 is going to have the SC grind but that's a different motor.
The thing that's missing is the sprocket on the left cam shaft to drive the air pump (emissions). My engine was missing the pump so it was a non-issue for me. I think mine were actually real ones from a C2.
I have been running the Elgin SC330 cams for 5 years now, and I absolutely love them. Mid-range and top end power improvements are very significant without any powerloss at the bottom end.
My 77 930 makes 6200RPM in 4th gear on the autobahn, something the not at all possible with the original cams. A good exhaust system will really enhance the benefits of the upgraded cams.
Call Engine Builders Supply in Nevada or write Jon at EBSracing@aol.com. He can give you more scoop.
Just went through a major upgrade to my motor that included 964 cams through Evolution, which has Web Cams grind them.
I had turbo, intercooler, headers, exhaust, and a full rebuild on top of the cams. As far as a change, I did not get the low end that I expected but from 3500 up to 7500 this thing absolutely rips. I was told by Evolution that the 964s raise the peak horsepower to 6800 rpm, which seems to be the case. With the mods that I have done, the car pulls like a freight train.
The intercooler, headers, and exhaust are B&B and the turbo is a K-27.
Slo Turbo is right Elgin are the best for the 3.3 hands down. My redline is 7200 and they are still there with grunt at the low end ..how do they do it.
