Post 930 Intercooler - which one?

Hey Guys,

I am new to this forum and the worl of 930s. I have just bought a stock, 1981 Turbo, and would like to upgrade the power without haveing to strip the engine.

Any recommendations on which intercooler to go for and approx costs?

Thanks in advance,
Narinder

I have a B&B Exhaust and Intercooler (www.bbtriflo.com) and am very happy with their value and performance. The Exhaust helps us w/non-euro cars by getting rid of the catalyst and the Intercooler helps you keep the power you have as the engine heats during prolonged boost periods (and is really important if you bump the boost up to .9 or 1.0 bar).

I chose the B&B because it was a direct bolt-on with no mods. The Kokeln unit requires changing the blow-off valve, the Garretson unit may be impossible to get (check with Andial) and the Ruf unit is VERY expensive. I paid about $1600 for mine and installed it in about an hour (most of that time for a new mask plate under the wing...).

Angelo...

"I paid about $1600 for mine"

Oh my. Next time go to: 930 / 911 turbo HP parts(click on that).

You could have gotten that same B&B cooler for less.

By the way... The Koklen cooler does use the "pop off" upgrade, but it comes with it, and is a performance enhancement to boot. Actually, the Koklen is the highest performing cooler in that price range. It is also available through that same 930 / 911 turbo list sponsor.

Narindar, call 913-310-9927 and feel free to also ask the 911 performance line what the best route & exact cost is for you.

I'm with Michael - we have a Kokeln IC. Just spent a day at the track and the car temp never got above the first line while on the track. The turbo comes on very nicely as well. We paid $1600 for the IC directly from Kokeln.

I am in total agreement here. B&B Triflow and a Kokeln Intercooler is the hot set-up.

Thanks for all your responses.

I have great things about the Kokeln IC however, I have seen much bigger ones from Kremer, DP and Garretson - are these necessarily better because of size?

I have the Kokeln with GHL headers and love it! Sure you change the blow off valve, but that's good. It's included in the kit. And the A/C still works (as much as it ever did)...

I have a euro 81 930 with a K29, 1 bar (until recently) , and ported/polished heads. It's a great combination.

Yes, Kremer, DP, Garretson make largher ones. Personally, living in Missouri with a Black on Black turbo, I'm not willing to forego the A/C. So a Kokeln logneck IC was the biggest I could find. The others require removal of the Compressor and/or the condensors. It's really a tradeoff of performance/comfort based on your needs.

Hello All,
If you replace the stock sized intercooler with a larger one (i.e. '91-'94)and you replace the wing insert to match, what do you do about the rear A/C condenser?
I'm wondering because I'm looking into doing this swap (I can get a great deal on the bigger cooler).

you need to relocate it into the rear fender flare or under the car. there is a company called griffiths that sells the kit. www.griffiths.com

I have heard that a full bay intercooler does not provide the expected benefit in single turbo applications -- the airflow primarily moves from the left side directly to the centrally placed throttle body, leaving the right side static.

That being said, you can't beat a full bay IC in terms of visual impression!

Not true. You need a very large turbo to take advantage of its benefits. I run a full bay IC with a garett t-72 turbo and after one hour of track time the full unit will warm to the touch.

I saw a Garretson intercooler today and although it seemed well made,it actually seemed smaller than the Kokeln I just bought and installed with great results. I'm not sure if they make other sizes, it just seems this one was definately smaller and why buy smaller?

Regards,
Jim
