Turbo Maintenance Cost Expectations
Q: What would I expect to pay in normal annual maintenance for a turbo? How would this compare to a normally aspirated car? Are there any particular worries?
FYI - I'm researching the acquisition of a turbo Porsche and given my budget, this is a 930 or '91C2T. Over the weekend, I drove a '92C2T and a '95 993 in order to get a feel for the turbo vs. non-turbo feel. I liked the turbo which both felt faster and more "sporty".
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Jeff,
Normal maintenance would be about the same, hard parts are where the difference in cost lies. Add 930 to the part number and the cost doubles.
Tune-up's run about 50% more on the turbo's but well worth the $$$. I have been driving 930's for 14 years now, never any regrets.
Be sure to get a pre-purchase inspection, both mechanical and body.
Good Luck,

Burning Brakes
Right off the top of my head, the 993 has hydraulic lifters so it never needs valve adjustment. I would guess turbos have shorter oil change intervals as well.

This depends on how many miles are driven a year and the condition of the car you purchase. A good PPI is a must. Your initial costs can sky rocket if you buy a car that has a poor maintenance history. Once the car is dialed in you need to do a valve adjustment every 15k miles. Shops usually get 8 hours for this on a 930. Then you have normal tune-up items which are not much worse then NA 911's. There is a long list of seals, fittings and gaskets that fail over time. Not too expensive to replace if you do the labor yourself but can cost an arm and a leg to have a shop do the work. I would venture a guess of $1000-1500 per year to keep a Turbo in top shape.
