1978 interior: Does this look right?
Hi everyone,
I dropped by this aircooled dealer near my house the other day and couldn't help but notice this mocha brown 930 Turbo from 1978 with gold wheels. Never considered brown and it does not flatter the car on pictures, but it has this awesome funky late 70s vibe going on, and I must say I took a liking!
Only the copper brown probably could top this.
Being a 993 driver, I need some help from the 930 experts, because internet research is showing some red flags about the interior.
Some details about the car. Apparently a 1978 according to VIN and wing, originally delivered in Germany. 35000km (23K miles) on the clock.
Seller wants approx $42000.
Some things that look weird about this interior:
1) The seats look like from a newer vintage. (Sides too round, edges too straight) Does it have something to do with the optional sports seats?
2) AC vents look like from an older vintage (1978 has vertical slats, right?)
Could it be a very early 1978 model?
3) No "Turbo" lettering on left rear seat back. Research says that was available 1977 and onwards.
The interior is in gorgeous condition, but I am wondering if is has been replaced by the wrong one. Any guess? Anyone have a 1978 with similar features?
Thanks a lot!

The seats are from an 85+ Carrera. Speedo is still in km. Not sure what the toggle switch next to the ashtray would be for. Maybe it is for an electric antenna or radar/laser jammer? Don't know what the red light between oil pressure and tach is. What is the sticker on the driver's door panel?

The interior looks redone to me, but Im not sure that is a deal breaker for me. It looks nice and appropriate. I think it has one of those cheap dash cover covers on it as well.
The color looks great to me.

Unfortunately mileage doesn't tell the care someone had for the car. The interior looks to have been redone..deal breaker?...IMO absolutely not!...the price is not too far out there. Period correct parts can still be had for a fair price. Paint, rust, engine health and suspension items would be of major concern. The rest is all cosmetic. Worth taking a deeper look...I love the color

Thanks for confirming my hunch. I knew there was something going on.
It may not be original, but it is nicely done, so I will give it a thought.
This car having been in Japan over the last 31 years, I can imagine they simply felt the need to swap it out. Hence the stickers, too. They just seem to love keeping them on for that new car feeling. Even on 3-4 year old CPO cars they swap out the steering wheel and seat at times to remove the spirit of the previous owner...
the dash cover is leather or leatherette with stitches...

well the speedo may have been replaced - this is a euro car to bring it into states it would have need a US speedo installed at least temporarily. Being a German delivery car get a good PPI- they use these hard in the motherland, also check undercarriage for rust. Mocha brown in an awesome color for a 930.

Wow, that is a beautiful brown 930!
That slantnose in the back is a 1978 factory original with 65K km on it.
The period Recaros look cool!

Actually it's a 1987 930S Special wishes car. It came from the factory with a bigger intercooler(same design/size as a RUF), different exhaust pipes and a few other unique factory bits. Worth a deeper look. Being a left hooker and considering its age it should not prove to be a difficult import...dang she is sweeet...

the red light between the oil gauge speedometer is a high exhaust temperature warning light. Requirement for cars in Japan. Often they arent connected.
Importing that old girl to the US shouldnt be a problem. Just be certain, and I cant stress this enough, to BE THERE WHEN THE SHIP ARRIVES. I almost lost 2 BMW 2002 turbos to customs.
Cars here get used very little. Its not uncommon for leather and paint to be destroyed by the hot humid summer and relentless sun on generally toxic air found in any megalopolis. So the car was probably painted $10,000 and the interior refreshed $2000. Prestige doesn`t have their own shop if i remember properly and the Japanese are very guarded with their personal information so maintenance records are usually hard to come by. Headstuds!! low mileage cars will need head studs.
i think i know that flatnose. I almost bought it. A friend of mine a retired baker owned it. I was told all dealer imported flatnoses to Japan did not have LSD, sunroof or A/C which made them very uncomfortable to drive. Hence they tend to change owners a lot more than other cars here. At that time it had Ruf Speedlines. He traded it in on a 75-911 2.7 RS It sat for a while then was owned for a couple of years by another guy I know, a software engineer. He too traded it back for an uber rare 75-911 2.8 RSR. Man that car brings tears to my eyes due to the smell of raw fuel at idle. I lost track of the flatnose when it was sold to some dude who raised it slightly above factory specs and put on the Fuchs. Then I saw it at Technical Mate and now at Prestige. Prestige is expensive. Nice guys though.
