I was 16 in 1976 and conditioned by family male role models to a rather snobbish view of the auto world: True classics and their heirs were all that mattered: Mercer/Bugatti/Lancia/Duesenberg/Ferrari/Jaguar/etc. This attitude was sustained by the sorry state of the mid seventies auto industry: Muscle cars had been neutered, the 'last convertible' had been built, emissions controls and 'safety regs' made some of the world's great designs (read: E-type) look like the Harrison Bergeron of sportscars.
Then, one day, as I'm leafing through Road & Track, BLAM! There is an ad for the Turbo. Outrageous Tail! Amazing Flairs! And headlight washers??? no way!? 0-60 in 5 seconds was unheard of in the Ford/Carter years. Truth be told I always thought Porsches were sorta odd and wimpy with those tiny little engines and New Beetle dimensions. The Turbo changed all that with one ad.
Anyhow, I'd love to try and find that original ad. I can dimly picture it in my mind's eye, I seem to remember the headlight washer being prominent but maybe that was because the snorkel was so... weird.
So does anyone have any scans of '76 ads?

interesting that the red '76 ads seem to have H4 healights but possibly color-ized. Possibly they only had euro-spec cars for the photo shoot? I'm going to try and find a silver '76 like the one in the 'no substitute' ad; that's the one I recall from my youth!

Porsches were never whimpy, and just got even whipmy-less when the turbo was added (as you know). Funny how our early perceptions tend to change. Early Vee-Dubs were lucky to put out 36 HP. Now multiply that by 10.
