Yeah, even if I get the R&P for a 930 I still have the same rpm drop and turbo lag between shifts even though I will go through the gears faster, right? Doing a R&P and shortening the gears would work but way too much money to spend on a 4spd. Decisions decisions

Brent,

I went through this too, as you know. The advice I got was to be careful of the strength of the shorter R&Ps when you're pumping lots of power through them. I don't know if you're doing track stuff, but if you are, that's where you'll have the problem. I know you've got 500 hp in your car, with torque that's approaching that, and you might be better off leaving the bulletproof 9:38 in place and fiddling with your gears. The dang things are expensive, though, and will run $600 to $750 each from my experience. But then again, the R&P is, what, $1800? I think you'd be happier with trick gears. That way you can set each one exactly where you want it.

Gino: You can put 3rd into the 4th gear position - it's an inexpensive way to lower your gears because it would allow you to leave 1st alone and buy a lower 2nd and 3rd to match the new "4th." But think about whether you'll be happy with top gear if you're using this on the street, or even on the track. From my research, that makes for too short a 4th gear -- it will be buzzy and annoying from 65 or 70 on up (on the street), and it will limit your top speed too much on a track. I can't remember the numbers anymore, but I seem to recall that the top speed will be around 135, maybe less. That's just too short for most tracks I know of.

If you leave 4th at 0.625:1 that would take care of it but would that be too steep a drop from 3rd if that gear-set becomes 1.208:1? 4th is really only a hwy gear.

when you think about, for the street you really only need speeds 1-3 because your going to want to bail at the 3rd gear-end speed 'on the street' anyway. I would not want to go over 100 mph on my semi-residential roads.

Gino,

I'd think that if you lower 3rd to 1.208, which is very low, and leave 4th alone, you'd be unhappy with the drop from 3rd to 4th. But really, it's a matter of your driving requirements and what you want. That's what's fun about picking gears. If you really want three "street" gears and "highway" gear, maybe it would work, but it would leave quite a gap. Your stock 2nd is 1.303; try shifting from 2nd to 4th right now and see how you like it -- your proposed shift from 3rd to 4th won't be all too different. With your proposed 3rd at 1.208 it will be a bit closer of course, but a test with your stock gearbox from 2nd to 4th would give you a hint of the effect.

But with only 4 gears to work with you don't close the gap much even though you will lower the ratios. You can a little if your 1st gear is 2.785 and 4th is .793 which is pushing it for a highway cruise gear. I think around 3500 rpms at 80 mph.

Sorry for reviving this thread after so long but I have been reading through the archives looking for suggestions on gear ratios for a short-geared 930 4-speed. Steve W. do you have any suggestions on what you prefer to use?

Thanks

930LDR,

You may need to PM Steve. He's around, but hasn't posted here in awhile.

Came across this very old thread while researching 930s, and belly laughed when I saw this. My new 992 TTS is indeed a 8 speed PDK. Now I need to find a 4 or 5 speed 930 for a car that actually feels fast / raw. The 992 Turbo is a monster, but a bit sterile.
