Question 79 930 head studs ??

did the early 930 engines have stud issues like the 911's after sitting awhile?

I believe so, from 91' on they used steel rod bolts and head studs. Anything earlier was that devalar crap that I heard will break on you in time. The first chance you get replace them with steel or better. I went with raceware but ARP is great also, it will cost you $750. Though I found none of my rod or head studs were broken when I made the change.

Its time and stress cycling that do them in.

After about 130K miles my 87 930 had one broken stud.

IMHO the raceware and ARP head studs are way overpriced. I'll happily use their rod bolts but I'll pass on their head studs.

Instead I'm using the latest 993 turbo studs that cost less than $200 per set. I also trust recently engineered porsche studs more than I would replacements from a company that produces hardware for mostly water cooled engines.

Faster:

All of the Dilivar-equipped 3.0, 3.2 and 3.3 litre engines had chronic stud issues caused by corrosion. Porsche pretty well solved that with the latest 993 studs and they are just fine.

We use either the factory or ARP studs.

On the subject of rod bolts:.......These do not break on their own, or are subject to corrosion like the head studs are. The 3.0 litre 10mm rod bolts are trouble free and even the 9mm rod bolts used in the 3.2, 3.3 & 3.6 engines will suffice if the engine RPM is maintained within factory set limits. Only when engine revs beyond 6750 are encountered will the 9mm rods bolt become an issue.

350HP930: I must honestly tell you that there are no finer engine fasteners than ARP and professional race engine builders have been using them for many years. ARP's fastener technology exceeds almost every manufacturer's in the world; air-cooled, water-cooled or otherwise. Lastly, there are 2 different studs used on the 993 engines and if you paid $ 200 for a set, you did NOT get the Turbo ones. 993 Turbos ones are much preferred and cost $ 492/set.

350HP930,

Take a trip down to your local Porsche Dealer and check out that Porsche engineering. I'm sure there will be plenty of good examples there to see. Its been said before, they don't make em like they used to. And thats engineering.

On the Head stud issue, the factory studs are one time "stretch" studs and are designed to be installed by air guns. That is why they are threaded all the way. Once installed, they should never be re used. The other types, ARP, Raceware and Performance Developments brands are designed to be torqued,(stretched) but will/should return to their original lengths once the torque is released.

BTW, if you have a 930, you have in my opinion the last and so far the best engineered/built Porsche.

350HP930, what in the hell isn't over priced in this hobby that we love. Everything except the wind shield wiper fluid cap (just .97 cents) is over priced. I can't believe I actually got used to paying too much for everything. At least your getting world class quality and it will be the last part you buy. So with that said if you buy ARP or raceware hardware it will be the last time you buy them. Think about it, drag cars use that hardware.
