H-4's,...hands-down.
There is no comparison. You can use many different H-4 bulb wattage combos and the beam pattern is E-code, not the crappy USA-spec one.
Be absolutely sure that you install relays if you use bulbs higher than the 55/60's.
Not only does this protect and prolong the life headlight switch in the steering column, this will offer a brighter, whiter light output due to a much smaller voltage drop at the bulb.

H4s are the way to go.
a) They look better. I think they look more "correct" for the period. Also, they are more "special". H5s are off the later common 911. H4s give you that "Euro" look.
b) They work better. There are lots of different bulbs you can get. I have the 90W/100W option (don't tell the cops).
c) They are way cheaper
What more could you want?

Peter,
Thanks for the advise. And like Steve, you too have been very instrumental in keeping this web forum alive and well.
Still planning to migrate west to the Bay Area? If you, you'll really enjoy the awesome driving that Northern California has to offer. Only downside is the CARB and low octane pump gas but that can easily be overcomed, it only takes money as you know.
Holiday Cheers to you and yours,
