Question 1976 Porsche 930

I am interested in buying a 1976, 930 that has 54,000 documented miles. I am new to Porsches and wonder if the 930 was a good car or a headache. I have been told the 3.0 litre engine was not a very good engine? That the 3.3 is the one to have. The asking price seems ok, under 20,000. Are there any specific problems with this year and model? Any guidence would be appreciated, I really like the looks of this car. Thanks

Mkelly,
I have a 77' 3.0, heres the deal. It's a great car and the 3.0 will rev faster than the 3.3 b/c of its shorter stroke. If set up right, will be just as fast if not faster than a 3.3, but!!!!! make sure the p.o. has had the engine rebuilt with new pistons! I had my car for 2 weeks and one of my piston
heads had separated from the skirt. btw. my 77' had 64,000 miles on it with a top end rebuild at 58,000 miles. Anyway, I paid 19,000 for it. Its still in the shop and is getting completely remanufactured. Needless to say I'll spend about 12,000.00 to get the job done right. my bad luck I guess. After its done though, it won't need major work done for a long time. But for the first 2 weeks I had it it was great. I'm not saying all 3.0 liter turbos are like this, so don't be discouraged but be sure to have a good shop do a PPI and go for a long test drive to make sure everything works right.
Best of luck,
Pete 77' 930
