Post What a shame!!!! An M5 beat me....

I was driving last nite on I-95 around 75-80 MPH when a BMW M5 pulled up next to me. I stepped on it and left him in the dust but eventually he caught up with me. We were doing 100-105 at this time. I stepped on it, leaving him behind, but, just as the last time he caught up with me again. At this time we were doing around 150 MPH. I didn't want to go any faster, but what surprised me that he really went for it and left me way behind. He must've been doing around 170. Anybody knows what is the top speed on that car?

According to BMW's own web site (http://www.bmw.com/bmwe/products/automobiles/m/sedan/index.html), the top speed is 250 km/h. That's about 155 mph.

I understand it is electronically limited to that speed, so it would appear the owner has adjusted/modified the factory setting.

I have been on the track with an M-5. They have quite a large engine and what appears to be very good top end power. I was in my 87 NA 911 that has about 250 HP. I could pull away in the turns, but in the straights that car would run up on me very quickly. As they say, there is no substitute for cubic inches.

I have a 1993 Euro M5 with a 3.8L engine that puts out 340 hp at the crank. The car/engine were designed as autobahn cruisers so most of the torque is in the 4000+ prm range.

My car will do 270 km/h, but it starts to get nervous around 260 km/h. At 250 you could drive all day.

It doesn't surprise me your 930 is quicker through the curves. On the track the car is heavy - there is no doubt about this as the car slides through corners. But then again, the M5 is not really a track car. After all, it is a four door sedan that fits four very comfortably.

I was not in my 930 - the M5 would not have caught me if that were the case (my 930 puts out about 480 HP). But I was very impressed with the power the car had. It was a late model M5 and had some mods as well - exhaust and brakes were obvious and I bet it had some engine and suspension tweaks. It looked like a really good get-away car.

I'm with Bill as we both have similar setups in our 930's. I'm not so much of a track person, more into straight line raw power and I'm pretty sure I would have taken on the M5. The last I ran up against was a 996TT and we pulled all the way upto 270km/hr on the straights. I was right on his tail and gave him a hard fight. My car was still pulling but I backed off. Just did'nt have the guts.

My brother has an '01 M5 with 400 hp and a 6 speed stock. He's also chipped it so that it puts out a little more and revs a little higher.

I've driven it on the street, but not the track and neither has he. Although it does very well, I don't think it would do that well at the track, at least in the twisties.

But, as JBH says, it's a 4 door sedan, albeit a fast one.

Oh yea...he said BMW was coming out with a 500 hp M5 model next year I think. That would get your attention.
