Post RUF 930 exhaust, any good?

Dear 930 owners

I'm in the process of getting a 930 (or a 964T). Today I looked at and drove a very clean and good -88 example in almost new condition with only 42.000 kilometers (26.000 miles).

It was totally original, except for the RUF 930 exhaust. I really liked the sound, which was still sort of discrete but a bit more full bodied when accelerating. However, on idle, it had a 'clucking' sound. I thought a little bit more from the right pipes than the left ones. I made it sound a little bit like a V8-boat type of sound, and not a spinning flat 6 from Zuffenhausen. Anyone else who has a 930 with RUF exhaust, or are familiar with them, who can help me tell if this is the normal sound for the RUF-exhaust, or if something is wrong?

Also, is there any gain in power with a RUF 930 compared to the original ROW 930 exhaust?

cheers

Christian

Christian: I have a Ruf 4-pipe exhaust on my '89 930 3.4. I have stock headers (no cat), though, so there is probably no hp gain of having the Ruf exhaust.

As for sound, it's totally awesome! I don't notice any difference from the left side or the right. As for what I think it sounds like, well, to me, it sounds like a louder, meaner version of the stock 930 rather than a boat. There's nothing like the sound of a flat 6 turbo coming down the road!

Dan,

This is the 4-pipe RUF system I'm talking about. It sounded great under load. What I am wondering about is during idle. It had sort of a 'clucking' pop-pop-pop-pop... sound which did resamble a V8 a little bit, compared to the more spinning sound of the original exhaust. For sure a bit more aggressive, but not really in my taste.

And I thought it 'clucked' only from one side, but not from the other. However it was hard to determine, I can be mistaking.

Also, there's no cat on the ROW-cars, so my question is if there are any power to be gained with a RUF-system on a ROW 3.3 Turbo?

cheers

Christian: I'm no expert, so this is all just my opinion. At idle I don't get the pop-popping sound you mention. I get that noise when I take my foot off the gas and am decelerating to a stop.

At idle the car sounds somewhat similar to a stock 930 only much more "throat-ier" (and much louder, obviously).

A US 930 hp rating is 282. Take the cat off and basically it is a ROW 930 at 300 hp. I don't think just a 4 pipe muffler will add much/if any hp. New/better/upgraded headers may give you a bit more hp. Clearly they will reduce the RPM level it takes to get boost going.

Another cool by-product of the 4 pipe - my car is set up in such a way that after lifting off higher RPM boost, I will shoot flames out the back. It is much cooler to have flames coming off both sides than just one!! :-)

If you are looking for hp gain, don't bother with just the exhaust. If you are looking for looks and sound, then you should consider it.
