930 Turbos (87-89)
I have recently been hunting down a good deal on a 930 Turbo. and want to ask the ones in the know a few questions.
1. What is the difference between a "grey" market and standard market vehicle and how can you tell the difference?
2. How do you tell the difference between a "factory" Slant Nose and a "non-Factory" Slant Nose?
3. Is the 89 Turbo... 5 spd a solid transmission in comparison to the 88 4 spd.

"Grey market" usually refers to a car which was not made for the US market. There is a website somewhere where you can check the VIN to see if it is U.S. or not (I'll try and find it or maybe someone else here knows). One problem with a grey car would be the mileage, if it originally had a km based speedometer chances are it has been changed.
"Grey market" can also refer to a car which has been rebuilt or was not orignally a turbo but is a conversion of some kind. In this case the VIN is also a key and a check with Carfax may turn up that the car is actually a VW welded in half to a Fiat! Whatever you buy spend a few hundred dollars to have it checked out by a reputable mechanic so you know what your getting into.
The VIN is also a key to wether a slant is factory or not.

My 89 5 speed with 70,000 miles is for sale for $32,900 , email me at turbo89930@hotmail.com if you're interested in more info.
I like the 5 speed/ hydraulic clutch better than the 4 speed, but that is a matter of taste.

Thanks for the websit information. Apparently the ones I am looking at are original slant noses. The question is..... as a current Porsche owner I find the slant nose... Intriguing! its unusual and very non traditional. Could this be a desirable vehicle in 10-15 years from now or is it a black sheep of the Porsche mystique?

The slant (or slope nose) is an intriguing modification. I don't care for it myself as I am drawn to the Carerra type front end with it's signature headlights and lines that were blended and lost with the 993.
The slant, however, is quite collectible. You will see in the 911 Redbook, that fewer of these were imported and I believe it was about a $7k option when new (in the Motronic Carerras).

FYI: The "genesis" of the slant nose comes from the late 70's vintage 935. The 935 was a very popular car in the SCCA Trans-Am series (a series that still exists today) - that's where my love for the turbo Porsche was borne (very audible spooling twin turbos and flame throwing exhausts!!).
Anyway, somewhere in the mid-80's - after non-factory versions started showing up - the Porsche factory began offering the slant nose as a factory option. Here's a web site that describes the differences between a factory slant and a non factory slant:

They had a certain amount of cachet for awhile, but lately the buzz has faded a lot. Probably because the 935 raced such a long time ago. Personally, they don't do anything for me. Reminds me of the front of a 944.
