Possible 930 purchase...
Hello all,
I was hoping for some honest feedback on a couple of 930s for sale right now. I'm new to the Porsche world, but have driven a 930 and 964T and would really love to own either. I had a PPI on a prospective 964T last week, but I found out that Rennlisters can have even more information on these cars than a PPI provides (yes, I'll still get a PPI on any car I buy). My budget is $40k for a driver. I have ~20% in reserve for first year maintenance and acquisition costs. So, here are the Top 3 nominees:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Turbo...t_10762wt_1165
I talked to the owner, he has receipts back to 2003. Seems well maintained since then, but is due Major Service. The car is very clean (in pictures). Dealer said bottom line was $38,500. Still waiting for dealer to provide copies of service receipts.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/911-T...orcev4exp=true
Car is very similar to Car #1 in terms of service history. The dealer will take $40k. It needs approx $500 in paintwork for botched repair job.

Here's the wildcard. I'll go look at it on Saturday. IF it passes PPI (compression and leakdown checks), what would be a deal breaker? Stolen...yup. Salvaged...yup. I don't mind redoing seat covers and carpets, maybe some electric work. My question: will an aftermarket A/C diminish the value? They're expensive ($2500 at retroair), so should it just be a winter driver (I'm an Oregonian living in Florida and the sun physically hurts me in the summer!)?
Thanks all for the help. I know it's frustrating listening to an FNG, but I'm trying to do my homework (I have the Excellence guide and have about 400 hours in reading Rennlist forums - I've been obsessed since driving the first 911!!). Just looking for honest opinions about these cars. Thanks!!
V/R,
Matt

As I mentioned on your other thread, the 77 is a rare, sought after car.
It's almost too cheap.
I like the second 930, but it has an am exhaust. The first one is nice too.
These cars are 25+ yrs old, I think the maintenance schedule is out da window a long time ago. Don't sweat it.
Get a good ppi, if the compression check carfax are clean, go for it, pretty non destructible. These are real drivers cars, you won't be disappointed.
The ac is ok, there are several companies that have upgrade kits, they work well.
You will get a lot more car for the scratch with a 930 vs a similar priced 964t.

Seems like red is your color. I have a red '87 with 30k miles that I'm thinking of selling. I've had it for 15 years... E-mail njspeedtrap at aol dot com if interested...

Matt, I'm also looking at the same 930 in Rancho Santa Fe. Would be interested to hear more about what you learned from the previous owner. Any info would be appreciated. Mario

'77 930 update:
Yes, it is a big project. Here's what I found:
1. VIN: door jam sticker replaced with "California Replacement VIN tag" with a US VIN #
2. Odometer: Shows 014XXX miles. It works, but clearly there is some mileage discrepancy.
3. Body: Several rust spots around lower valances, rear quarter extensions and engine lid area. The largest is about 4" across.
4. Paint: Needs repaint. Clear coat is gone.
5. Tires: Look old, but still have tread
6. Interior: Needs carpets. Seats are decent (just a small tear in driver's seat). Some panels have been removed for access to electrical problems, but weren't reattached
7. A/C and Heater: doesn't have any components for either (yup, nothing).
8. Motor: drops of oil on ground in garage, but couldn't see culprit. Didn't feel strong enough with Turbo boost showing .7 bar (I haven't driven a '77, but I was expecting more).
9. Doesn't have any records, no spare, no tool kit, no book. Anything not attached to the car is gone.
I'm sure it's a great project for someone, it's just a bit too much for me. If someone wants to talk more, please let me know. I'm happy to help.

I played this game for months...and it got frustrating so I understand what you're going through. However that said...once you find the one....so worth it. Set your standards such as color, price, year range...and then find one with excellent records and history. You can find an excellent low mileage 930 for much less than 40k. It's out there... hang in there.

Oh yeah, my wife and I were stationed in Mountain Home for a few years recently (2008-2011). We loved it there. This is the time of year we'd go to Yellowstone and snowmobile for a week - we really miss it!! Enjoy the winter!

This is going on the market within the next few weeks. Too many cars, something has to give (so my wife says). Currently doing a service on it in my home shop.
